Chapter 3 - The Price of Survival

The hospital room was a stark, sterile white—a sharp contrast to the chaotic, gold-leafed insanity of the Vance estate. The doctor, a kind-faced woman named Dr. Aris, sat by my bedside, reviewing my charts.

"The baby is fine, Clara," she said softly. "The trauma was significant, and there was some bruising, but your little one is a fighter. They aren't going anywhere."

I let out a breath I felt like I’d been holding for three years. "Thank you."

"The police are waiting outside," she added. "They need your official statement. But honestly? You need to sleep first."

I didn't sleep. My mind was a whirlwind of the last fourteen months—the late nights in my office while Julian was out with Chloe, the secret meetings in coffee shops with federal investigators, the way I had learned to navigate the complex web of Vance offshore accounts while pretending to be an airheaded socialite.

My phone, which had been recovered from the debris of the shower, buzzed on the nightstand. It was a message from an unknown number.

The holdings are frozen. The board has declared bankruptcy. You are the sole administrator of the trust funds you moved before the raid. You have the leverage.

I smiled. The "real heir" wasn't the child Chloe was pretending to carry, and it wasn't the status Julian was so obsessed with. It was the future I had secured for myself and my child, free from the shadow of the Vances.

I knew the media circus was just beginning. By now, the headlines would be screaming. Billionaire Dynasty Collapses. Baby Shower Raid. The Wife Who Brought Down an Empire.

I wasn't afraid of the headlines. I was finally ready to be seen.
