Chapter 4 - The Aftermath

The next two weeks were a blur of depositions, legal maneuvering, and media frenzy. The Vance family’s legal team tried everything to discredit me, painting me as a "scorned woman" who had hallucinated the entire conspiracy.
But the evidence I had compiled was airtight. The paper trail led directly from Arthur’s shell companies to illegal political bribes and massive health-insurance fraud. When the federal prosecutor released the first set of documents to the press, the public outcry was deafening.
Julian, currently sitting in a holding cell, had tried to frame Chloe as the mastermind, claiming she had manipulated him. Chloe, in turn, had turned state’s evidence, revealing that she wasn't even pregnant—she’d been wearing a prosthetic belly to secure her position in the inheritance line.
I sat in my lawyer's office, listening to the news.
"It’s over, Clara," my attorney, Sarah, said. "They’re offering a plea deal, but the judge is leaning toward maximum sentencing because of the domestic violence charge. You’re safe."
"I don't just want to be safe, Sarah," I said, looking out at the city skyline. "I want to be free. I want to clear my name and start over."

"Your name is already being cleared. You’re being hailed as a whistleblower. People see what you did."
"I didn't do it for them," I said. "I did it for the version of me that thought she had to accept their abuse to be worth something."
