Chapter 5 - The Unraveling of the Elite

With the Vances in prison, their social circle began to crumble. Many of their associates were implicated as the investigation expanded. The "old money" world that had once looked down on me as a "barren piece of trash" was now terrified, wondering if I had records on them, too.

I started receiving anonymous calls, threatening letters, and even offers of massive bribes to "keep quiet" about certain transactions.

I handed every single one to the FBI.

I realized then that the power the Vances had possessed wasn't just money—it was the fear that they could do anything and face no consequences. By showing the world they were human, fallible, and criminal, I had broken that spell.

One afternoon, I visited Julian in the detention center. It was a surreal experience. He sat on the other side of the plexiglass, his orange jumpsuit looking absurd against his pampered features.

"Why are you here?" he asked, his voice hollow.

"To tell you that it’s finalized," I said. "The divorce. I took everything the law allowed me to take—which, it turns out, is most of your remaining personal assets."

"You ruined me, Clara."

"No," I said calmly. "You ruined you, Julian. I just handed you the tools to finish the job."

He looked at me with a flicker of his old ego. "You’ll never be happy. You’re broken."

I stood up and smoothed my dress. "I was broken when I was with you. Now, I’m just starting to heal."
