Chapter 1 - The Ringing Line

The ring tone echoed in the quiet hospital room, each chime stretching the tension until it felt as thin and sharp as a razor blade. Luke took a half-step forward, his shoes squeaking against the polished linoleum, his jaw tight as he calculated his next move. The nurse shifted subtly, her body acting as a physical shield between the phone and the man whose calm facade was rapidly disintegrating. On the second ring, the line picked up.

A voice came through the speaker, breathless and weary. "Hello?"

It was Sarah. Hearing her voice after three years of silence hit Caroline like a sudden draft of cold air against her scorched skin. Tears welled in Caroline’s eyes, stinging the raw burns on her cheeks.

"Sarah," Caroline whispered, her voice barely a rasp. "It's me."

Silence hung on the other end of the line for a terrifying second before a sharp intake of breath shattered it. "Caroline? Oh my God, Caroline! Where have you been? He told me—he said you didn't want to talk to me anymore, he said—"

"Sarah, I'm at St. Jude's Memorial," Caroline choked out, her gaze fixed on Luke, whose knuckles were white as he clutched the edge of the doorway. "Please. I need help."

"I'm coming," Sarah said without a second's hesitation. "I'm on my way right now."

The nurse hung up the receiver and immediately turned to the room's secondary wall phone, punching in a three-digit extension. "Security to Room 408. We have a Code Violet in progress. Notify local precinct dispatch immediately."

Luke’s face transformed. The measured, gentle expression he wore for doctors and neighbors melted away, revealing the jagged, furious spite underneath. "You stupid bitch," he snarled, stepping around the nurse. "After everything I’ve done for you, keeping a roof over your head, taking care of you when you couldn't even give me what every normal woman gives her husband—"

"Step back, sir!" the doctor commanded, placing herself directly in his path.

Before Luke could reach the bedside, the door swung open, and two heavily built hospital security officers burst in, followed closely by two uniform police officers who had been writing a report down the hall. The doctor pointed straight at Luke. "This man severely burned his wife and lied about the cause. The medical evidence indicates intentional, catastrophic assault."

Luke’s composure shattered completely. He raised his hands, shifting instantly back into his victim routine. "Officers, this is a terrible misunderstanding! My wife is hysterical. She suffered a psychotic break near the stove, and now she’s accusing me because she's grieving—"

"Save it for the station," the lead officer said, snatching Luke's wrist and pinning it behind his back. The metallic snap of handcuffs echoed through the room—a sound Caroline had dreamed of for four excruciating years.

As they hauled him toward the door, Luke looked over his shoulder at Caroline. His eyes were dark, filled with a promise of retribution that made her stomach churn. "You're nothing without me, Caroline! You hear me? You'll crawl back!"

When the door slammed shut, the room fell into a heavy, ringing quiet. The monitor continued its rhythm. The doctor turned to Caroline, her gentle hands carefully checking the intravenous lines feeding painkillers into her system.

"He's gone, Caroline," the doctor said softly. "He is never going to touch you again."
