Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Past

The pain relief swept through Caroline's veins in a warm wave, but it could not dull the cold terror rooted deep in her chest. For four years, Luke had been the weather, the tide, and the sky. Her entire existence had been curated to prevent his outbursts. A misplaced spoon, a lukewarm coffee, a glance out the window at a passing neighbor—anything could trigger the rage that ended in bruises, broken bones, and locked doors.

An hour later, the door creaked open. Sarah burst in, her coat half-unbuttoned, her hair disheveled from running through the rain outside. When her eyes fell upon Caroline—the bandages covering her chest, arms, and throat, the sunken cheeks and hollow eyes—Sarah dropped her purse and collapsed beside the bed, sobbing uncontrollably.

"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry," Sarah wept, carefully kissing the uninjured crown of Caroline’s head. "He told me you hated me. He blocked my number on your phone, sent me texts pretending to be you, telling me to leave you alone... I should have come to the house. I should have broken down the door."

"He wouldn't have let you in," Caroline whispered, reaching out with trembling fingers to touch her sister's face. "He made sure I was completely isolated. Sarah... he killed my babies."

Sarah froze, looking up through tear-stained eyes. "What?"

The lead physician, Dr. Evelyn Vance, stepped forward holding a blue folder containing Caroline's medical history alongside the newly printed diagnostic scans.

"Miss Sarah," Dr. Vance said, her voice laced with grave authority. "Your sister did not suffer an accidental kettle spill. This was a sustained, targeted act of torture using boiling liquid. But worse than that... our exploratory scans revealed deep scar tissue within her uterine lining and pelvic cavity. Caroline has experienced at least four late-stage miscarriages, all caused by severe blunt force trauma to her abdomen. The genetic tissue remnants we analyzed from past emergency records—which her husband hid under private clinic payouts—show that every single fetus was male."

Sarah covered her mouth, a horrified gasp escaping her lips. "He was beating her to force miscarriages?"

"He convinced her she was barren," Dr. Vance explained, her jaw trembling with controlled anger. "He tortured her physically and broke her mentally, making her believe her own body was failing him. He was murdering her unborn children and punishing her for their deaths."

Outside the room, Detective Marcus Thorne stood listening through the cracked door. He held a notepad in one hand and a voice recorder in the other. He stepped inside, his expression solemn, his badge gleaming under the harsh lights.

"Mrs. Vance," Detective Thorne said gently. "My name is Detective Thorne. I’ve just come from interviewing your husband at the precinct. He claims you have a history of self-harm and severe mental illness. But the medical evidence Dr. Vance just provided changes everything. We aren't just looking at domestic assault anymore. We are looking at attempted murder and multiple counts of feticide."

Caroline looked at the detective, the fog in her mind beginning to clear. The years of believing she was weak, broken, and useless began to burn away under the heat of a single, undeniable truth: she was a survivor, and the monster was finally behind bars.
