Chapter 4 - The Sister's Shield

Three weeks passed before Caroline was stable enough to leave the burn unit. The physical recovery was agonizing; skin grafts on her abdomen and arms required daily, painful scrubbing and bandage changes. Yet, with every agonizing step she took down the hospital corridors, she felt a strange, intoxicating sensation: freedom.
Sarah never left her side. She brought Caroline fresh clothes, set up a temporary bedroom in her quiet suburban home, and hired a private security guard to sit outside the front gate. Though Luke remained in high-security custody pending trial, his father was using every trick in the legal book to harass Caroline.
One afternoon, as Caroline sat on Sarah’s porch wrapped in a soft cardigan, a sleek black sedan pulled up to the curb. Arthur Vance stepped out, wearing a tailored suit and an expression of cold condescension.
The security guard immediately stepped forward, but Caroline held up a hand. "Let him speak," she said softly. She wanted to face the man who had bred the monster.
Arthur walked up the driveway, stopping a few feet from the porch steps. He didn't look at her injuries; he looked at her as if she were an unpleasant line item on a ledger.
"Caroline," Arthur began, his voice smooth and transactional. "This entire situation has spun completely out of control. Luke made mistakes—he has a temper, which I acknowledge—but locking him in a cage will not restore your health or bring back what was lost."
"Mistakes?" Sarah barked, stepping out from the house with her hands clenched into fists. "He poured boiling water on her! He murdered her children!"
Arthur ignored Sarah, keeping his eyes on Caroline. "I am prepared to offer you a settlement. Three million dollars. Cash. Placed into a private trust fund today. You sign an affidavit stating you were confused due to pain medication, agree to drop all personal claims, and move out of the state. You can buy a nice house, start fresh, and live comfortably for the rest of your life."
Caroline looked at her father-in-law. For years, this man had looked down his nose at her simple family, reminding her how lucky she was that Luke had "lowered himself" to marry her.
"Three million dollars," Caroline said slowly.
Arthur smiled, thinking he had won. "Yes. Paid immediately."
Caroline stood up. Though her body was scarred and her movement stiff, her posture was straighter than it had been in a decade. She looked Arthur dead in the eyes.
"Every scar on my body is worth more than your family's blood money," she said, her voice ringing with absolute clarity. "Tell your son that I won't take three million. I won't take thirty million. The only thing I will accept from him is a life sentence behind bars. Get off my sister's property before I have the guard arrest you for witness intimidation."

Arthur’s face darkened, his aristocratic mask slipping to reveal the same ugly arrogance his son possessed. "You will regret this, Caroline. We will destroy your reputation in court."
"Try it," Caroline said. "I have nothing left to hide. But Luke has everything to lose."
