Chapter 5 - The Legal Battle Begins

The grand jury indicted Luke Vance on all counts, setting the stage for one of the most high-profile trials the city had seen in years. The media caught wind of the story—a wealthy financial analyst secretly torturing his wife and murdering his unborn male heirs out of an unhinged, psychopathic obsession with control.
The prosecution team was led by District Attorney Eleanor Reyes, a formidable woman known for her uncompromising stance on violent crime. Eleanor met with Caroline and Sarah in her office to prepare for the preliminary hearings.
"Luke's defense team is led by Richard Sterling," Eleanor explained, pulling up a profile on her monitor. "Sterling is a shark. His strategy is clear: he is going to attack your credibility. He will portray you as an unhinged, emotionally unstable woman who was obsessed with getting pregnant, failed repeatedly, and burned herself in a desperate cry for attention or revenge."
"He can try," Caroline said quietly. "I spent four years trapped in a house with him. I know how he lies. I know how he mimics sanity."
"We need to show the jury the pattern," Eleanor said. "The boiling water was just the climax of years of methodical psychological and physical isolation. Did Luke ever write things down? Did he keep journals, financial logs, or cameras in the house?"
Caroline paused. A long-forgotten memory surfaced from the fog of her captivity.
"The smart home system," Caroline said suddenly. "Luke was paranoid. He thought I was talking to neighbors or trying to find ways to leave. He installed hidden nanny cameras in the kitchen, the living room, and the hallway. He told me they were motion sensors for the alarm, but I saw him checking an app on his laptop late at night."
Eleanor’s eyes lit up. "He monitored the house? Do you know where the server stored the footage?"

"He used a private encrypted cloud drive," Caroline remembered. "He had a secondary hard drive hidden in his study inside a locked wall safe behind the bookshelf."
Eleanor immediately reached for her desk phone. "I'm drafting an emergency search warrant for that house right now. If that hard drive contains even a fraction of what you're describing, Luke Vance isn't just going to prison—he's never seeing the light of day again."
