Chapter 3 - The Arrest & Medical Truth

By the next afternoon, Luke’s wealthy family had mobilized. His father, Arthur Vance—a prominent corporate attorney with deep political connections—arrived at the precinct accompanied by two high-priced defense lawyers. They immediately demanded Luke's release on bail, citing his clean criminal record, his community standing as a successful financial consultant, and his wife's supposed history of mental instability.

In the precinct interrogation room, Luke sat back, his arrogance fully restored. He adjusted his silk cuffs and offered the detective a patronizing smile.

"Look, Detective," Luke said casually. "My wife is emotionally fragile. She’s had multiple hysterical episodes over the years due to her inability to carry a child to term. Yesterday, she lost her temper while cooking, knocked boiling water over herself, and went into shock. I drove her to the hospital myself! Does that sound like a perpetrator to you?"

Detective Thorne smiled grimly. He tossed a thick document onto the steel table between them.

"That's a nice story, Luke. But here’s the problem with stories: they don't match forensic pathology."

Thorne opened the folder, pointing to color-printed thermal mapping and tissue density scans. "This is the burn pattern on your wife’s body. If a pot of water falls from a stove, it creates a cascade splash—drops spreading outward, heaviest at the feet and legs. Your wife has a concentrated, direct-contact thermal destruction pattern starting from her sternum down to her lower belly. The water was poured directly onto her while she was pinned flat on her back."

Luke’s smile faltered slightly. His father snapped, "This is speculative opinion! You have no proof my client held her down!"

"We have skin tissue under her fingernails matching Luke's DNA," Thorne countered, leaning forward until he was inches from Luke's face. "And we have four years of altered medical records from that crooked private clinic you paid off in cash to perform covert evacuations after your 'accidents.' We subpoenaed their vault two hours ago. The head physician there is already cutting a deal with the District Attorney to save his own license."

Luke's face drained of color. The smug demeanor evaporated, replaced by a twitching, terrified panic.

"Furthermore," Thorne continued, "the District Attorney has officially upgraded the charges. You are being held without bail for Attempted Aggravated Murder, Felony Domestic Torture, and four counts of First-Degree Aggravated Feticide. You aren't going home today, Luke. You aren't going home for a very long time."

As the officers grabbed Luke to march him down to the holding cells, he began to scream, cursing his wife, cursing the police, his composure completely destroyed. His father sat frozen at the table, realizing for the first time that no amount of money could cover up the brutal reality of what his son had done.
