Chapter 8 - The Falling Empire

On the third day of the trial, Caroline was called to the stand.

The courtroom was so quiet that the faint hum of the air conditioner was the only sound as Caroline took the oath. Eleanor Reyes approached the witness box with gentle respect.

"Caroline," Eleanor said quietly. "Please tell the jury about the night of October 12th."

Caroline took a slow, steady breath. She looked past the lawyers, past the reporters, and locked her eyes straight onto Luke. He tried to glare at her, trying to summon the terrifying authority he used to hold over her, but Caroline did not flinch.

"He came home angry because his meeting had gone late," Caroline began, her voice strong and clear. "He asked why dinner wasn't on the table. I told him I had felt nauseous and spent the afternoon resting. He screamed that I was lazy. He grabbed me by my hair and dragged me into the kitchen."

She described every detail: the sound of the kettle heating up, the weight of his knee on her chest, the horrific heat as the boiling water hit her skin, and the chilling words he roared into her face as she drifted out of consciousness.

Members of the jury gasped. Two jurors wept openly.

When Richard Sterling stepped up for cross-examination, he tried to tread carefully, knowing that attacking a visibly scarred victim would backfire with the jury.

"Mrs. Vance," Sterling said softly. "You suffered terrible trauma. But isn't it true that my client showed remorse immediately after? Didn't he carry you to his vehicle and rush you to the emergency room?"

"He didn't take me to save my life," Caroline answered without hesitation. "He took me because he realized if I died in that house, he couldn't cover up the body. He spent the entire drive telling me that if I said a single word to the doctors, he would make sure my sister Sarah had a deadly 'accident' on her way home from work."

The gallery erupted in murmurs. Luke suddenly slammed his hands on the table, standing up in a rage.

"She's lying!" Luke screamed, his face turning purple with fury, his mask slipping completely off in front of the judge and jury. "Shut up, you ungrateful bitch! I gave you everything! You were nothing until I took you in!"

"Mr. Vance, sit down!" the judge shouted, slamming his gavel repeatedly. "Control your client, counselor, or I will have him remanded to the holding cell in restraints!"

It took three bailiffs to force Luke back into his chair. As he sat there panting, his true nature was exposed to every person in that room. The illusion of insanity was gone; all that remained was a pathetic, abusive coward.
