Chapter 9 - The Verdict

The jury deliberated for less than two hours—one of the fastest verdicts in state history for a trial of such magnitude.
When the court reconvened, the atmosphere inside the room was heavy with anticipation. Caroline sat between Sarah and Eleanor, holding their hands tightly. Luke stood beside his attorney, his posture slumped, his arrogance completely drained away.
"Will the defendant please rise," the judge ordered.
Luke stood, trembling slightly.
"On the first count of Attempted First-Degree Murder, how do you find?"
"Guilty," the jury foreman announced firmly.
"On the second count of Aggravated Felony Domestic Torture, how do you find?"
"Guilty."
"On the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth counts of First-Degree Aggravated Feticide, how do you find?"
"Guilty on all counts."
A collective sigh of relief echoed through the gallery. Sarah broke into tears, throwing her arms around Caroline's neck. Caroline closed her eyes, feeling a heavy weight that she had carried for four nightmare years lift off her chest and vanish forever.
Two weeks later, the sentencing hearing took place. The judge did not hold back.
"Luke Vance," the judge said, looking down from his bench with deep disdain. "You demonstrated a level of calculated cruelty that shocks the conscience of this court. You hid behind wealth, status, and privilege while subjecting the person who trusted you most to unimaginable agony and murder. You are a predator in every sense of the word."

The judge leaned forward, his voice absolute. "I sentence you to four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, plus an additional forty years for felony torture. You will spend the rest of your natural life inside a maximum-security state penitentiary. Court is adjourned."
As the guards shackled Luke’s feet and hands, he turned toward the gallery one last time. His father covered his face with his hands, refusing to look at him. Luke looked at Caroline, pleading with his eyes for a shred of pity, but Caroline simply turned her back on him and walked out of the courtroom into the bright sunlight outside.
