Chapter 1 - The Breach

The sound that followed was not a scream, nor a siren, but the heavy, synchronized thud of boots on gravel. The iron gates of the Thorne mansion did not just swing open—they were violently detached from their hinges by the reinforced bumper of a blacked-out tactical vehicle.
Julian Thorne barely had time to adjust his grip on the baseball bat before six shadowed figures materialized from the darkness. They moved with a terrifying, silent economy of motion. Within three seconds, the bat was torn from Julian’s hands, his arm twisted behind his shoulder with a sharp pop, and his face slammed squarely into the cold marble steps he had been standing on so triumphantly moments before.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Arthur Thorne roared, dropping his glass of bourbon. The heavy crystal shattered against the stone, amber liquid soaking into his pristine slippers. "I am Arthur Thorne! I own this town! You are trespassing on private property!"
A man in non-reflective tactical gear stepped out from the lead vehicle. He wore no insignia, no badges, only a matte-black helmet and NVG mount. He didn't even acknowledge Arthur. Instead, he marched straight toward Elias, brought his hand to his brow in a crisp, sharp salute, and spoke in a voice like grinding stones.
"Perimeter secure, Colonel. Ironclad protocols engaged. No one enters. No one leaves. Cellular signals in a five-mile radius have been jammed. Orders?"
"Secure the perimeter. Keep the parents on the lawn," Elias Vale commanded, his voice devoid of anger, which made it infinitely more terrifying. "And if anyone moves, break them."
Miriam Thorne’s composure finally shattered. Her pale blue dress rustled as she backed toward the mahogany double doors. "You can't do this! We have political connections! The governor is a personal friend!"
Elias didn't look at her. He walked past Julian, who was groaning in pain, spitting blood onto the white marble. Elias paused for a single second, looking down at the young man who had dared to touch his daughter.
"You thought she was helpless because she was alone," Elias whispered. "You forgot she had a father."
Elias kicked the heavy mahogany doors open. The lock snapped like a dry twig.
Inside, the mansion smelled of expensive wax, old mahogany, and a sickening underlying stench of bleach and despair. Elias pulled a tactical flashlight from his jacket. The beam cut through the dim foyer, illuminating the grand staircase, the oil paintings of Thorne ancestors, and the silence that hung like a funeral shroud.
"Audrey!" Elias called out. His voice reverberated off the vaulted ceilings. "Audrey, I'm here!"
A faint scuffle echoed from the upper floor, followed by the metallic lock of a heavy door sliding shut. Elias moved with a speed that defied his age, taking the stairs three at a time. The quiet retired colonel was gone. In his place stood the Commander of the 5th Special Operations Group—a ghost who had cleared strongholds in Kandahar and tracked warlords through the jungles of South America.
He reached the end of the second-floor hallway. A heavy steel door, freshly installed into the frame of a master bedroom, blocked his path.
"Audrey?" Elias pressed his ear to the wood.
"Dad?" Her voice was barely a rasp, thin and cracked from months of dehydration and crying. "Dad, don't leave me! Please, they locked it from the outside!"

"Stand back from the door, sweetheart," Elias said softly. "Give your old man two seconds."
Elias stepped back, drew a compact breach charge from his coat pocket, slapped it against the lock mechanism, and pulled the pin.
