Chapter 6 - Dismantling the Dynasty

Over the next two weeks, the news was dominated by the meteoric collapse of the Thorne family empire.
What the public saw was a massive federal indictment involving money laundering, conspiracy, and racketeering. What happened behind the scenes was a systematic execution engineered by Elias Vale and his network of former military intelligence operatives.
Every shell company Arthur Thorne owned was dismantled. Every offshore bank account in the Cayman Islands and Switzerland was seized and liquidated. The political figures who had protected the family for decades were forced to resign one by one as blackmail files surfaced anonymously in the press.
In his cell at the federal detention center, Julian Thorne sat in isolation. The arrogant smirk that had defined his life was entirely gone, replaced by hollow terror. He was facing charges of human trafficking, aggravated assault, kidnapping, and attempted murder—charges that carried a minimum sentence of life without parole.
Arthur Thorne tried to use his remaining millions to hire the best defense team in the country, but within forty-eight hours, every major law firm backed out after receiving confidential summaries of the evidence compiled against them.
Elias visited Arthur in the visitation room of the federal prison once before the trial began.
Arthur sat across from Elias, separated by bulletproof glass. He was wearing an orange jumpsuit, his hair unkempt, his hands shaking.
"What do you want, Vale?" Arthur spat weakly. "You've taken everything. My money, my house, my name. Are you here to gloat?"
"I don't gloat, Arthur," Elias said through the intercom, his tone smooth and icy. "I came to give you a choice."
"A choice?" Arthur sneered. "What choice?"
"You and your wife plead guilty to all charges tomorrow morning," Elias said. "You forfeit every asset, sign over full legal restitution to Audrey, and accept a maximum security life sentence without appeal."
"And if I refuse?" Arthur demanded, banging his fist on the counter. "I'll fight this in court! I'll drag Audrey through the mud! I'll make her testify about every single second she spent in that room!"
Elias leaned closer to the glass, his eyes narrowing into two slits of lethal intensity.
"If you force my daughter to stand on a witness stand and relive her nightmare," Elias whispered, "the files I held back—the ones concerning your involvement with international cartels—will be released to the general prison population. You won't survive your first week in holding."

Arthur stared at Elias, realizing with sickening clarity that the old man was not making a threat. He was stating an inevitable fact.
Arthur’s shoulders slumped. The titan of industry cracked like cheap glass. "I'll... I'll sign the plea bargain," he choked out.
