Chapter 9 - The Legacy of Shadows

That evening, as the stars filled the clear Montana night sky, Elias sat by the stone fireplace in his study.
On his desk sat his old military radio, an encrypted satellite phone, and his service medals. Beside them was a small wooden box containing the dog tags of the men who had served under him over thirty years of dark, unacknowledged operations.
Marcus walked into the room, leaning against the doorframe.
"The unit wants to know if you're officially standing down, boss," Marcus said quietly. "The Pentagon has been calling discreetly. They want to know if 'The Monster' is officially retired."
Elias picked up his old callsign patch—a black skull surrounded by silver wings—and held it in his hand for a long moment. He thought of the decades he had spent in the shadows, fighting wars that didn't exist for people who would never know his name. He had done his duty to his country.
But his greatest mission had been saving his daughter.
Elias tossed the patch into the roaring fire. The fabric caught flame, burning bright before turning to ash.
"Tell them Colonel Elias Vale died the night my daughter came home," Elias said softly. "The only job I have left is being Audrey's father."
Marcus smiled warmly, standing at attention one final time to give his old commander a slow, deep salute. "Understood, sir. It was an honor serving with you."
May you like
"The honor was mine, Marcus. Take care of the boys."
As Marcus left the study, Elias looked out the window. Outside on the illuminated lawn, Audrey was setting up an outdoor telescope, laughing as she called out to the ranch dogs playing near the fence.
