Chapter 2 - Ghost in the Hallway

The detonation was a muted thump that blew the heavy door inward off its frame, sending splinters and dust raining down the hallway.

Elias stepped through the smoke before the debris even hit the carpet.

The room was a prison cell masquerading as a luxury bedroom. The windows were painted black from the outside and fitted with heavy steel bars. There was no light except for a single bare bulb hanging from the ceiling. On a mattress stripped of sheets lay Audrey.

She looked like a shadow of the vibrant, laughing girl who had graduated top of her class two years ago. Her wrists were raw and scabbed over, marked by heavy plastic restraints. Her cheeks were hollow, her eyes wide with a mix of blinding fear and disbelieving hope.

"Dad..." she sobbed, trying to stand, but her legs gave out beneath her starved frame.

Elias caught her before she hit the floor. He lifted her into his arms—she felt as light as a child, weighing barely eighty pounds. The rage inside him flared into a white-hot nova, but he kept his hands steady, wrapping her gently in his heavy tactical jacket.

"I've got you, baby," he whispered, burying his face in her matted hair. "I've got you. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again. I promise you on my life."

"Julian... he took my phone... he made me read scripts when you called..." Audrey choked out through her tears, clinging to his combat shirt with all the strength left in her frail fingers. "He said if I tried to run, he’d kill you..."

"He lied," Elias said, his voice dropping an octave into absolute dead calm. "He couldn't touch me if he had an army. Now close your eyes. We're going home."

He carried her down the grand staircase. Outside, the scene had evolved. Three dark SUVs were parked in a semicircle around the Thorne family. Arthur Thorne was on his knees, handcuffed, screaming threats about lawyers. Miriam was sobbing hysteric tears, her pristine blue dress ruined by the dirt. Julian was slumped against the steps, coughing, guarded by two heavily armed operatives in full tactical gear.

As Elias stepped into the moonlight carrying Audrey, the team leader approached. "Colonel, local law enforcement is forty-five minutes out due to 'routing issues' we initiated. Medical transport is waiting at the secondary LZ."

"Get Audrey to the private clinic in Sterling," Elias ordered. "Full medical team, psychological trauma specialists, and 24/7 armed perimeter security."

"Right away, sir."

Elias gently placed Audrey into the back of the armored SUV, where a military combat medic immediately began setting up an IV line and warming blankets. Audrey didn't want to let go of her father's hand.

"I have to clean up a few things here, sweetheart," Elias said softly, kissing her forehead. "I'll be right behind you. I'm never leaving your side again."

May you like

She nodded weakly, her eyes fluttering shut as the sedative administered by the medic began to take effect. The door clicked shut, and the SUV sped off into the night under heavy escort.

Elias turned back to face the Thorne family. The temperature on the lawn seemed to drop instantly.
