Chapter 5 - Whispering Walls

Two days later, the private wing of Sterling Memorial Hospital was locked down under military-grade security.
Elias sat in a comfortable armchair beside Audrey's bed, holding her thin, pale hand. The IV fluids had restored some color to her cheeks, but the physical bruises—and the deeper emotional scars—remained painfully visible.
She was sleeping fitfully, her body twitching whenever a floorboard creaked outside.
The door softly clicked open, and Dr. Sarah Lin, a top trauma specialist and former army medic, stepped into the room. She held a clipboard with detailed charts.
"How is she, Sarah?" Elias asked softly, not letting go of Audrey's hand.
"Physically, she’s stabilizing," Dr. Lin replied in a low voice. "Severe malnutrition, multiple micro-fractures in her wrists and ankles from long-term restraints, and extreme vitamin deficiencies. But the psychological trauma... Elias, they kept her in sensory isolation for weeks at a time. They broke her confidence, made her believe the outside world had forgotten her."
Elias’s jaw tightened, his knuckles turning white. "Will she recover?"
"With time, therapy, and patience," Dr. Lin said softly. "She needs to feel safe. Truly safe. The fact that you pulled her out when you did saved her life. Another month in that house, and her organs would have failed."
Audrey’s eyelids fluttered open. She looked around frantically until her eyes landed on Elias. Her breathing immediately slowed down.
"Dad?" she whispered.
"I'm right here, baby," Elias said, leaning closer and wrapping his arms gently around her shoulders. "You're safe. Nobody can touch you here."
"Julian... his mother... they said you were dead," Audrey sobbed, burying her face in Elias’s chest. "They showed me fake obituaries... they said you died in a car crash six months ago... that's why I stopped trying to escape..."

Elias felt a cold fire ignite in his chest. The sheer cruelty of the Thornes went far beyond physical abuse; it was a calculated attempt to destroy his daughter’s spirit completely.
"I'm alive, Audrey," Elias murmured softly, stroking her hair. "And as long as I breathe, nothing in this world will ever hurt you again. The Thornes are finished. All of them."
