Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail of Poison

By the end of the week, Sarah was moved from the hospital to a secure, private estate outside the city, guarded round-the-clock by specialized security personnel. Her body was slowly purging the toxins, but the emotional wounds were deep and jagged.

I spent every hour I wasn't at the police station sitting by her bed, feeding her soup, holding her hand, and listening to her talk as she slowly reclaimed her voice.

"They told me you knew about the tea," Sarah murmured one evening as the sunset cast pink hues across her bedroom. "Evelyn said you were the one who bought the powder. She said you wanted me gone so you could marry someone worthy of your status."

I closed my eyes, a painful knot twisting in my throat. "I would rather lose every penny I own, every building, every ship, and every contract than lose you, Sarah. They manipulated both of us. They kept me buried under a mountain of fake crisis reports at work so I’d be away six days a week, while they isolated you here."

Meanwhile, my investigative team was digging deep into the paper trail.

In Marcus Vance’s downtown office, stacks of financial documents and medical files covered the large oak conference table.

"It’s far more coordinated than simple greed, Mark," Marcus said, tossing a folder in front of me. "We traced the origin of the arsenic compound. It wasn't bought off the street. It was prescribed through a corrupt private practitioner named Dr. Julian Vance—no relation to me—who was receiving under-the-table kickbacks from Tyler’s personal account."

"A doctor willingly prescribed poison?" I asked, my hands clenching into fists.

"He prescribed it under the guise of an experimental 'holistic fertility treatment,'" Marcus explained. "Evelyn convinced Sarah that the tea was a fertility remedy to help her conceive. Sarah took it willingly at first, trusting her mother-in-law. But as the poisoning advanced, it made her physically weak and mentally foggy. That’s when the physical violence started."

"Why the physical abuse?"

"Control," Marcus replied coldly. "To break her spirit so completely that she would never think to consult an outside doctor or tell you. And there's another piece to this puzzle. Look at this."

He slid a document across the desk. It was a property deed transfership for my main shipping terminal in downtown Chicago—a property worth over thirty million dollars.

"They didn't just want the insurance money from Sarah's death," Marcus revealed. "They were preparing to frame Sarah for embezzlement and poisoning you. The plan was to eliminate Sarah, make it look like she was stealing from you to poison you out of spite for her infertility, and then have Evelyn assume legal conservatorship over your estate when you 'mysteriously' suffered a breakdown from the grief."

The sheer darkness of their plot left me speechless. It wasn't just a family conflict; it was a cold, calculated, murderous cabal operating inside my home.

"Is the evidence solid enough for the District Attorney?" I asked, my voice deadly steady.

"It’s airtight," Marcus smiled grimly. "Attempted murder, corporate fraud, grand larceny, conspiracy, and torturous domestic abuse. But Tyler and Evelyn just posted bail through an anonymous hard-money lender. They aren't going down without a fight."
