Chapter 8 - The Fall of the House of Miller

The trap had closed.
The public revelation of the toxicology reports and video evidence completely destroyed Evelyn and Tyler’s narrative overnight. The public backlash was immediate and merciless. The hard-money lenders who had posted their initial bail revoked their backing to avoid being tied to the scandal.
Within hours of the press conference, police units surrounded the cheap motel on the outskirts of Chicago where Evelyn, Tyler, and Chloe were hiding.
I watched from inside an unmarked police SUV down the street as SWAT officers knocked down the door.
Tyler tried to flee out the back window, but was violently tackled to the muddy ground by two officers—ironically landing face-first in the exact same cold mud he had forced Sarah to kneel in days before. Evelyn was dragged out screaming hysterically, her designer clothes stained, her hair disheveled, swearing curses at the officers and at me.
Chloe was arrested alongside them as an accessory to conspiracy and domestic abuse.
Three days later, the grand jury returned a multi-count indictment:
Attempted Murder in the First Degree (Evelyn and Tyler)
Aggravated Domestic Battery and Torture
Grand Larceny and Corporate Embezzlement exceeding $4 Million
Insurance Fraud and Forgery
Conspiracy to Commit Murder
Because of the overwhelming forensic evidence, financial paper trails, and recorded video footage, the defense team appointed to them advised them to plead guilty to avoid the death penalty or life sentences without parole.
During the pre-trial hearing, I sat in the front row of the courtroom beside Sarah.
Tyler sat at the defense table in an orange jumpsuit, wrists and ankles shackled, looking haggard, broken, and terrified. Evelyn looked twenty years older, her grand illusions of high-society status shattered into worthless ash.
When the judge called for statements before sentencing, Evelyn looked back at me, tears streaming down her wrinkled face.
"Mark... please..." she rasped through the glass barrier. "I'm your mother... tell the judge... tell them it was all a misunderstanding! I did it for you! I wanted to protect you from that woman!"
I stood up, walked to the podium set for victim impact statements, and looked my mother dead in the eyes.

"You didn't do it for me, Evelyn," I said, my voice echoic and resonant in the quiet courtroom. "You did it for greed. You treated love like a transaction and my wife like an animal. You thought you could destroy her because she was kind and quiet. But her strength built this company, her love kept me human, and her grace is something you will never comprehend."
I turned to the judge. "Your Honor, the prosecution requests the maximum penalty under the law. No leniency. No mercy."
