Chapter 5 - Venom in the Press

Two days later, the empire fought back—not in a court of law, but in the court of public opinion.

I walked into the Miller Logistics corporate headquarters on Monday morning to find a sea of reporters and news vans parked outside the main glass entrance. Microphones were shoved into my face the moment I stepped out of my vehicle.

"Mr. Miller! Is it true you put your elderly mother out on the street in the middle of the night?!"

"Mark! Did you frame your brother for embezzlement to hide your own offshore tax evasion?!"

"Is Sarah Miller suffering from severe psychiatric disorders as your family claims?!"

I pushed past the horde of journalists without saying a word, my security detail creating a barrier until the heavy glass doors hissed shut behind me.

In the boardroom, my executive team was panicked. On the giant screen, a live broadcast of a local news station was playing. Evelyn, dressed in modest black clothing, looking frail and tearful, was sitting beside Tyler and Chloe in a televised interview.

"Mark has been manipulated by his wife," Evelyn cried softly into a handkerchief on live television. "Sarah has suffered from severe delusions for years. When we tried to get her psychiatric help, Mark snapped. He threw us out in the pouring rain, cut off our medication, and framed my poor son Tyler! We are living in a motel, terrified for Mark’s life!"

Tyler jumped in, putting an arm around his mother. "My brother is running an illegal money laundering operation through Miller Logistics. When I found out and tried to stop him, he threatened to destroy us all using his wealth and dirty cops!"

The board members looked at me with pale, worried faces.

"Mark," senior board member Richard Sterling spoke up. "The stock price for our public holdings dropped twelve percent this morning. The board is receiving calls from our largest international clients. If this scandal continues, they will terminate their contracts."

I looked at the screen, watching Evelyn’s calculated, crocodile tears. A small, dark smile crept onto my lips.

"They think they’re playing chess," I said calmly, turning to my assistant. "Call a press conference for 2:00 PM today in this very room. Invite every major news network in the state."

"What are you going to do, Mark?" Richard asked nervously.

"I’m going to give the media the full story," I replied. "With receipts."
