Chapter 4 - The Vultures Gather

Though Evelyn and Tyler were sitting in federal custody awaiting their arraignment, the war was far from over.

By noon the following day, the financial news networks were already having a field day. Headlines flashed across CNBC and Bloomberg: MILLER LOGISTICS COO ARRESTED IN $4M EMBEZZLEMENT SCHEME; FAMILY FEUD THREATENS CHICAGO TRANSPORT GIANT.

The board of directors of Miller Logistics called an emergency meeting for 2:00 PM.

As I walked through the glass doors of our corporate headquarters in downtown Chicago, flanked by Arthur Vance and two private security guards, the atmosphere inside the building was thick with tension. Employees were whispering in quiet huddles near the water coolers, dropping their eyes as I passed.

Inside the mahogany-paneled boardroom, six men and women in dark business suits sat around the table. At the head of the table sat Richard Croft, a senior shareholder and former logistics magnate who had always eyed my company with greedy ambition.

"Mark," Croft said, standing up and adjusting his silk tie as I took my seat at the opposite end of the table. "We’ve reviewed the preliminary reports from the FBI and your legal team. While we sympathize with your... complex family drama... the facts remain undeniable."

"Get to the point, Richard," I said, setting my briefcase on the table and folding my hands.

"The point," Croft declared, leaning forward, "is that four million dollars of corporate equity has been leveraged without full board approval. The press is dragging our brand through the dirt. Our stock valuation dropped twelve percent this morning. The board feels that your personal life has become a massive liability to the stability of Miller Logistics."

"Is that so?" I asked smoothly.

"We are proposing a motion," Croft continued, a predatory smile playing on his lips, "to temporarily suspend your duties as CEO and appoint an interim management committee—headed by myself—until the federal investigation is concluded."

Arthur Vance chuckled softly beside me, opening his leather portfolio. "A very touching power grab, Richard. Truly poetic. But you seem to have forgotten one tiny detail."

Croft frowned. "Which is?"

"Mark Miller holds fifty-one percent of the voting shares in this corporation," Arthur said, tossing a stack of legal documents onto the center of the table. "Under Clause 14 of the corporate charter, any motion to suspend the Founder and CEO requires an absolute seventy-five percent supermajority vote of all issued voting shares—including Mark's."

Croft’s face darkened. "He can't vote on a conflict of interest!"

"It isn't a conflict of interest when the CEO is the victim of the crime," I said, standing up and leaning over the table, my eyes locking onto Croft’s with unwavering intensity. "I built this company from a two-truck operation into a hundred-million-dollar logistics powerhouse. If any of you think you can use my family's betrayal as an opportunity to stage a hostile takeover, you are severely mistaken."

I looked around the table at the other board members, several of whom immediately shifted uncomfortably in their chairs, avoiding my gaze.

"Effective immediately," I announced, "Richard Croft is removed from the Executive Committee for attempting to breach fiduciary duty. My legal team has secured a six-million-dollar personal line of credit to instantly cover the offshore liability and stabilize the company's balance sheet. Miller Logistics is not falling. It is expanding."

Croft’s jaw worked silently as he realized he had walked directly into a trap. Without saying another word, he snatched his papers off the table, slammed his briefcase shut, and stormed out of the boardroom.

"Anyone else have an issue with my leadership?" I asked the remaining board members.

Silence filled the room.

"Good," I said, buttoning my suit jacket. "Then let’s get back to work."
