Chapter 7 - The Trial of Evelyn Miller

Four months later, the federal criminal trial of United States v. Evelyn Miller and Tyler Miller commenced at the Everett McKinley Dirksen United States Courthouse in downtown Chicago.

The courtroom was packed to absolute capacity. Journalists, legal scholars, and curious spectators filled every wooden bench, eager to witness the downfall of one of Chicago's most prominent high-society matriarchs.

Evelyn sat at the defense table, wearing a plain gray prison jumpsuit. The expensive hair salon visits, facial treatments, and designer clothes were long gone. Her hair was streaks of gray, her face hollowed out, her eyes darting frantically around the courtroom like a caged animal.

Beside her, Tyler sat slump-shouldered, looking completely defeated, having already entered a guilty plea to reduced charges of wire fraud in exchange for a lighter sentence.

I sat in the front row of the spectator gallery, my hand firmly holding Sarah’s. Sarah looked stunning—wearing a tailored navy blue suit, her hair styled elegantly, her posture tall, proud, and completely devoid of fear.

The lead federal prosecutor, Assistant U.S. Attorney David Stern, called his final witness to the stand.

"The prosecution calls Sarah Miller."

A hush fell over the courtroom as Sarah stood up, smoothing her jacket, and walked calmly to the witness stand. She swore the oath, took her seat, and looked directly across the room at Evelyn.

Evelyn glared back at her with pure hatred, but Sarah didn't flinch. Not even a millimeter.

"Mrs. Miller," Prosecutor Stern began, stepping toward the center of the well. "Please describe for the jury the events that occurred on the evening of July 14th of last year."
