Chapter 6 - The Infertility Deception

While I prepared for the press conference, Sarah was undergoing a comprehensive medical evaluation at a specialized women’s health center under the care of top medical experts.
I drove to the clinic at noon to check on her before facing the cameras.
Sarah was sitting by the window, the color slowly returning to her cheeks, though her body remained small and fragile inside her sweater. When she saw me enter, a faint, beautiful smile touched her lips—the first real smile I had seen from her in over two years.
"Mark," she said softly, taking my hand as I sat beside her. "Dr. Vance brought me the results of my complete reproductive panel."
I held my breath. For three years, Evelyn had hammered into Sarah's mind that she was broken, useless, and incapable of carrying a child—a shame Sarah had carried like a heavy iron weight on her shoulders.
"What did the doctor say?" I asked gently.
Tears welled up in Sarah’s eyes, but this time, they were not tears of pain.
"There is nothing wrong with me, Mark," she whispered, her voice breaking with deep emotion. "I was never infertile. The doctors Evelyn took me to for years were giving me synthetic hormonal suppressants that simulated reproductive failure. Combined with the low-dose poison, my body was simply too weak to sustain a cycle."
I closed my eyes as a tear escaped down my cheek. "They lied to you... about everything."
"They wanted me to feel utterly worthless," Sarah said, her voice growing stronger, imbued with a newfound resolve I had never heard in her before. "They wanted me to believe that I was lucky to even be allowed to live in your house. They used my shame to keep me silent."
She reached out and picked up a manila folder resting on the table.
"Mark," she said, looking straight into my eyes. "I want to go to the press conference with you."
"Sarah, no," I said immediately, worried for her fragile state. "The media is brutal right now. You don't have to face those vultures."
"I need to face them," Sarah insisted, squeezing my hand tightly. "Evelyn and Tyler spent years taking away my voice, my dignity, and my humanity. If I stay hidden, I am letting them keep power over me. I am coming with you, and I am going to tell the world what they did."

Looking into her eyes, I saw no longer the broken woman kneeling in the mud picking up rice. I saw the resilient, courageous woman I had fallen in love with years ago.
"Then we face them together," I said.
