Chapter 2 - The Bail Trap

The county jail holding cell smelled of floor bleach and industrial disinfectant—a far cry from the five-star oceanfront suite at the Ritz-Carlton South Beach.
Pilar Vance sat on the edge of the stainless-steel bench, her white linen designer pants now smudged with dirt, her manicured acrylic nails scratching frantically at her arms. Across from her, Marcos paced the cramped concrete cell like a caged animal, his face pale and his eyes red from hours of hysterical sobbing.
"Call him again, Marcos!" Pilar snapped, her voice high and erratic. "Call Arthur Vance! He was your father’s friend! He cannot allow that wretched girl to treat us like common criminals!"
"Mom, shut up!" Marcos screamed, rounding on her for the first time in his adult life. "Arthur Vance is HER lawyer now! Did you not hear what the prosecutor said during the arraignment?! He handed over three years of corporate tax records! They know about the Cayman account! They know I transferred four hundred thousand dollars!"
"You transferred that money to support ME!" Pilar shrieked back. "I am your mother! She had millions! What difference did a few hundred thousand make to her?!"
Before Marcos could answer, a heavy iron door slid open. A guard barked out their names. "Vance, Marcos. Vance, Pilar. You’ve got a bail hearing."
Ten minutes later, they were ushered into Courtroom 4B. They expected to see a lenient judge, perhaps a family acquaintance from their country club days. Instead, sitting behind the mahogany bench was Judge Marcus Cole—a judge notorious for his zero-tolerance policy on domestic abuse and white-collar fraud.
Sitting on the prosecution side was Arthur Vance. Sitting beside him, radiant in an emerald-green tailored blazer, was Elena.
"Your Honor," Arthur began, standing up and opening a crisp blue folder. "The defense is requesting a reduced bail of fifty thousand dollars. The prosecution strongly opposes this. The defendants not only committed calculated financial fraud exceeding $400,000, but they also intentionally locked a woman in active labor inside a residential structure, depriving her of medical care to go on an overseas vacation."
"It was an honest mistake, Your Honor!" Pilar blurted out, stepping forward before her court-appointed public defender could stop her. "She was lying! She gives false alarms all the time!"
Judge Cole banged his gavel with a sound like a gunshot. "One more outburst from you, Mrs. Vance, and I will hold you in contempt immediately." He turned his piercing gaze down to the paperwork. "Given the severe nature of the child endangerment charges, the clear evidence of pre-meditated lock-out, and the significant flight risk posed by foreign bank accounts, bail is set at $1.5 million for Marcos Vance, and $1 million for Pilar Vance."
Marcos dropped to his knees. "Two and a half million dollars?! We don't have that! Elena, please!" he begged, reaching across the wooden barrier toward her. "Elena, tell them! Tell them to lower it! You have the money! Pay our bail!"
Elena slowly stood up. She walked over to the wooden partition, looking down at Marcos as if he were a bug under glass.

"I do have the money, Marcos," Elena said, her voice smooth and echoing through the silent courtroom. "In fact, I have enough to post your bail five times over. But every single dollar is locked behind a court-ordered injunction to pay back the funds you stole from my company. You wanted a vacation on my money. Now you get to stay here... on the state's dime."
She turned and walked out of the courtroom, the crisp sound of her heels echoing like a countdown clock.
