Chapter 3 - The Audit of Shadows

With Marcos and Pilar stuck in county lockup unable to raise two point five million dollars in bail, Elena focused her attention on destroying their financial power structures.
Accompanied by Arthur Vance and a team of external forensic auditors, Elena entered the executive suite of Vance & Associates Marketing. The office was silent; news of Marcos’s arrest had already leaked through the business grapevine, and employees sat at their cubicles whispering nervously.
Elena called an emergency company-wide meeting in the main boardroom.
"Effective as of 9:00 AM today, Marcos Vance has been removed from his position as Chief Executive Officer," Elena announced calmly, standing at the head of the conference table. "As majority owner holding 51% of total equity, I am assuming direct management control."
A nervous murmur rippled through the room. Senior Vice President Julian Miller raised his hand. "Mrs. Vance... what about our payroll? There are rumors that corporate accounts have been frozen."
"The frozen accounts were the personal conduits Marcos used to embezzle funds," Elena clarified smoothly. "I have personally injected two million dollars of liquid capital into our primary operational accounts from my private fund. Your salaries are secure. Your bonuses will be paid on time. However, an immediate internal investigation is underway."
For the next seventy-two hours, Elena didn't sleep. She combed through line items, expense reports, and vendor contracts. What she uncovered was far worse than simple corporate embezzlement.
Marcos hadn't just been stealing money for Pilar’s shopping sprees; he had been taking massive under-the-table loans from high-interest hard-money lenders affiliated with organized financial cartels to cover up his failed crypto investments.
"Elena," Arthur said, barging into her office on Wednesday night with a grim expression. "We have a problem. A man named Victor Rossi just filed a lien against this building."
"Rossi?" Elena frowned. "Who is he?"
"A loan shark who operates under the guise of an offshore investment firm," Arthur explained, placing a document on her desk. "Marcos put up this office building—which he incorrectly claimed he owned entirely—as collateral for a 1.2 million dollar loan six months ago. Rossi wants his money, or he’s seizing the assets."
Elena looked at the contract. Marcos had forged her signature as co-guarantor.
Instead of panicking, a dark, calculating smile touched Elena’s lips. "He forged my name on a loan shark's contract?"

"Yes. Which legally invalidates the lien against you, but..."
"No, Arthur," Elena interrupted, standing up and looking out over the city skyline. "Don't invalidate it yet. Let Rossi know that Marcos is currently in County Jail, and that Pilar holds the offshore account where part of that cash was deposited. If Rossi wants his money, he shouldn't look to me. He should look to them."
