Chapter 9 - The Shadows Fade

Five years passed.
Life moved forward with incredible speed and beauty. Aria Capital Enterprises grew into an international powerhouse, featured on the cover of major financial magazines. Elena became a global icon for resilience, women’s rights, and corporate ethics.
Gabriel had become an irreplaceable part of their lives. He wasn't just a partner to Elena; he was the loving, strong, present father figure that Aria had deserved from day one. He read her bedtime stories, taught her how to ride a bike, and never missed a single parent-teacher conference.
One rainy afternoon, Elena received a official letter from the Department of Corrections.
Marcos had submitted a written request for a prison visitation, claiming he was terminally ill with a kidney condition and begging for one last meeting with his daughter before his sentence was up.
Elena sat in her executive office, looking at the letter for a long time.
She called Gabriel. "He wants to see her."
Gabriel arrived at her office within fifteen minutes. He sat beside her, gently taking her hand into his warm palm. "It’s completely your choice, Elena. If you want to go, I’ll drive you. If you don't, I’ll burn the letter."
Elena looked down at their joined hands, then up at Gabriel’s soft, reassuring eyes. She realized something profound in that moment: Marcos held zero power over her. He was no longer a villain; he was merely a ghost from a past life that no longer had any relevance to her present.
"I will go," Elena said softly. "Not for him. For me. To close the book forever."
The next morning, Elena walked into the state prison visitation room. She went alone.
When Marcos was led in, Elena barely recognized him. His hair was gone, his posture was hunched, and his eyes were hollowed out by years of hard labor and regret.
He sat down on the other side of the glass, weeping as he picked up the phone.
"Elena..." he rasped, his voice trembling. "You... you came."
"I did," Elena said quietly, holding the phone to her ear.
"Where... where is Aria? Did you bring her? Please... I just want to see my daughter once..."
"Aria is at school, Marcos," Elena replied, her tone completely even, devoid of hate, revenge, or pity. "And she will never come here."
"I’m sick, Elena!" Marcos pleaded, pressing his hand against the glass. "I have kidney failure! I don't have much time! I am her father!"
"You were her biological donor," Elena corrected softly. "A father is the man who stayed awake with her when she had fever at 2 AM. A father is the man who taught her how to swim. A father is Gabriel—the man she calls Dad."
Marcos froze, his face twisting in emotional agony. "Gabriel...? Arthur’s nephew?"
"Yes," Elena said. "We are getting married in three months. Gabriel is adopting Aria legally."
"No... no! Elena, please! Don't erase me!" Marcos sobbed, slamming his fist against the glass panel. "I made a mistake! I was stupid! I listened to my mother!"
Elena slowly stood up. She looked down at him, her dark eyes filled with absolute peace.

"You locked the door, Marcos," Elena whispered. "And I built a world on the other side. Goodbye."
She hung up the phone and walked out, never looking back.
