Chapter 5 - The Custody Showdown

The family court hearing was held in camera, away from the prying eyes of the press.

Marcos had been brought in from jail in handcuffs, wearing an orange jumpsuit that hung loosely off his rapidly thinning frame. His public defender sat beside him, looking thoroughly defeated before the proceedings had even begun.

Across the room sat Elena, looking pristine, powerful, and surrounded by Arthur Vance and two child protection specialists.

"Your Honor," Marcos’s public defender began hesitantly. "My client acknowledges his reckless mistake on the day in question. However, he was under extreme emotional manipulation from his mother, Pilar Vance. He is a loving father who wishes to exercise his basic constitutional rights to see his newborn daughter, Aria."

Marcos looked up, forcing tears into his eyes. "Your Honor... I love my daughter. Elena is keeping her from me out of vengeance. I deserve a second chance!"

Judge Sarah Jenkins looked over her spectacles at Marcos, then turned to Arthur Vance. "Counsel, what is the mother’s stance?"

Arthur didn't even stand up. He simply pressed a button on his laptop.

A large monitor in the courtroom flickered to life. A audio recording began to play—the audio captured by the front porch smart-bell camera on the day of the incident, which Arthur’s forensic tech team had managed to recover from the cloud servers.

Pilar’s cold voice echoed through the speaker: “Lock both deadbolts. Let her stay here and handle it herself. Make sure she can't follow us to the airport.”

Then came Marcos’s voice, clear as day: “Are you sure, Mom? What if she’s really in labor?”

Pilar: “She’s lying! Just lock it, Marcos! Do you want to waste seven thousand dollars? Lock it!”

Then came the unmistakable double-click of the deadbolts turning, followed by Marcos’s voice: “Done. Let's go. We're gonna miss the flight.”

The courtroom was dead silent.

Judge Jenkins’s face turned red with absolute fury. She slammed her hand down on the desk so hard the water glass rattled.

"Mr. Vance," Judge Jenkins barked, her voice shaking with rage. "You didn't just abandon your wife; you consciously trapped an infant in utero without access to emergency care. That is not an 'honest mistake.' That is depraved indifference to human life."

She grabbed her pen and signed the order without hesitation.

"Emergency petition for visitation is DENIED indefinitely. Parental rights of Marcos Vance are hereby TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED pending the outcome of his criminal trial. A permanent restraining order is issued. You are not to come within two thousand feet of Elena Vance or Aria Vance for the remainder of your natural life."

Marcos dropped his head onto the table, sobbing hysterically as the bailiffs pulled him up by his armpits and dragged him out of the room.
