Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Queen

With Marcos’s custody bid crushed and his criminal trial fast approaching, Pilar Vance realized that no help was coming from her son.
Through a shadowy arrangement with a low-tier bail bondsman who took her last piece of jewelry—a vintage diamond necklace—as collateral, Pilar managed to secure a temporary conditional release on bail, restricted to house arrest at a dingy, one-bedroom motel on the outskirts of the city.
The woman who used to spend thousands on afternoon tea at five-star hotels was now living in a room that smelled of stale tobacco and mold.
On her second day at the motel, Pilar’s phone rang. It was an unknown number.
"Hello?" Pilar asked eagerly. "Is this Arthur Vance? Have you come to offer a settlement?!"
"Mrs. Vance," a smooth, unfamiliar female voice answered. "This is Victoria Sterling, President of the Oakridge Country Club Board of Directors."
Pilar straightened up, her old arrogance reflexively flaring. "Victoria! Finally! I have been trying to reach you! There has been a monstrous misunderstanding regarding my membership—"
"There is no misunderstanding, Pilar," Victoria interrupted coldly. "I am calling to inform you that the board has unanimously voted to permanently revoke your membership and ban you from the premises."
"You can't do that!" Pilar gasped. "I have been a benefactor for twelve years!"
"You are currently under criminal indictment for grand fraud and child abuse," Victoria said, her voice dripping with disgust. "Furthermore, Elena Vance has stepped forward to clear the two hundred thousand dollar debt you left behind in unpaid catering bills and event fees over the past three years. She is now our primary sponsor for the annual charity gala."
"Elena paid my debt?!" Pilar screamed.
"She paid it, and in exchange, she requested that we release your full financial history with the club to the public local ledger," Victoria replied. "Everyone knows, Pilar. Everyone knows you were living on stolen money while abusing your daughter-in-law. Good day."

The line went dead.
Pilar threw her phone against the stained motel wall, watching it shatter into pieces. She fell to her knees on the filthy carpet, pulling her hair, screaming into the empty room. Her status, her money, her friends, her reputation—everything she had built her miserable life upon had been systematically erased by the woman she had locked inside a house.
