Chapter 4 - The Predator at the Gate

Two days later, the county jail visitation room witnessed an unexpected visitor.
Pilar was called down to the glass partition, expecting her public defender. Instead, sitting on the other side was a sharply dressed man in a dark tailored suit with a jagged scar running down his left jawline—Victor Rossi.
"Who are you?" Pilar asked defensively, picking up the heavy plastic phone receiver. "Are you a private attorney?"
Rossi chuckled, a sound like dry autumn leaves scraping across concrete. "Not quite, Mrs. Vance. My name is Victor Rossi. Your son owes me one point two million dollars."
Pilar’s blood ran cold. "I... I don't know what you're talking about! Marcos has a successful firm! Talk to his wife, Elena! She has all the money!"
"Mrs. Vance," Rossi said, leaning close to the glass, his eyes piercing and utterly devoid of mercy. "Your daughter-in-law’s lawyers handed me a full audit report this morning. She proved in court that your son forged her signature. The debt belongs strictly to Marcos... and to you, considering six hundred thousand dollars of my money was wired directly into your account in Grand Cayman."
"That... that was a gift from my son!" Pilar gasped, her voice trembling.
"It was my capital," Rossi corrected coldly. "And I want it back. In seventy-two hours, my legal team will liquidate your offshore account through international court orders. But that only covers half. The remaining six hundred thousand? You and your son will pay it back, interest included, the moment you step out of jail. If you don't... well, prison won't be the worst place you'll find yourselves."
Rossi hung up the receiver and walked out, leaving Pilar shaking violently, clutching her chest as hyperventilation set in.
Meanwhile, at Elena’s estate, life was changing.
The estate was peaceful. The pristine nursery was filled with sunshine, soft pink decor, and the quiet sounds of baby Aria breathing gently in her crib.
Elena sat in a plush armchair, reading through court filings. Her sister, Sophia, who had rushed into town the moment she heard of the tragedy, walked in carrying a tray of chamomile tea.
"You're working too hard, El," Sophia said softly, setting the tea down. "You just gave birth ten days ago. You need to rest."
"Rest is a luxury I’ll enjoy when my daughter is completely safe," Elena replied, looking over at Aria. "Marcos’s lawyers filed a petition for emergency paternal visitation today."
Sophia snorted in disgust. "A man who locked his laboring wife in a house wants visitation?! On what grounds?!"
"On the grounds that he’s the biological father," Elena said, her eyes narrowing. "He thinks he can use child custody leverage to force me into dropping the embezzlement charges and paying off his debt to Rossi. He thinks I’m still the timid girl who will compromise for the sake of 'family'."

"What are you going to do?"
Elena picked up her pen, signing a document with bold, unwavering strokes. "I’m going to present the judge with the firefighter’s axe-shattered door as Evidence A."
