Chapter 1 - The Cold Steel of Injustice

The back of the police cruiser smelled of stale vinyl and industrial cleaner. Lily sat on the edge of the hard plastic seat, the oversized steel handcuffs heavy against her fragile, scraped wrists. Through the tinted, wire-mesh window, she watched the glittering glass facade of the Brookstone Private Hospital shrink into the distance.

Her bare feet still throbbed with pain, the soles sliced open by two kilometers of jagged asphalt and shattered glass. But the physical agony was nothing compared to the ringing echo of Vanessa’s whisper: “Girls like you always end up exactly where they belong.”

At the precinct, they didn't treat her like an eight-year-old child who had just performed a miracle. They treated her like a calculated predator. They stripped her of her wooden box of marzipan candies—her only source of food for her and her ailing grandmother—and locked her in a cold, sterile holding room.

"Look at me, kid," Officer Vance said, slamming a heavy folder onto the metal table. "Daniel Carter is one of the most powerful men in this state. If you were trying to hold his kid for ransom, you better start talking now. Your accomplices—who are they?"

Lily looked down at her dirt-caked knees. Her voice was cracked, barely a whisper. "There are no accomplices. I was by the fountain selling sweets. The lady with the big sunglasses was talking on her phone. The little boy fell. He was shaking. His lips turned blue like the sky before a storm. She looked at him, got into a black car, and told the driver to go."

The officer laughed, a harsh, dismissive sound. "You expect me to believe a billionaire's fiancĂ©e left a child to die in a public park? Vanessa Sterling is a مŰčŰ±ÙˆÙ philanthropist. Try again, kid."

Lily closed her eyes, praying to a sky she couldn't see. Please, pretty boy. Just breathe. Don't let them erase the truth.
