Chapter 6 - The Feast of the Street King

An hour later, Lily was sitting on the edge of Noah’s luxury private hospital bed. Her feet had been cleaned, bandaged, and tucked into the softest velvet slippers the hospital could find. She was wearing a brand-new cotton dress, her hair brushed neatly by a private nurse.
Noah, though still weak, was sitting up, his eyes bright as he looked at the girl who had carried him through the fire.
"You carried me really far," Noah whispered, reaching out to touch the small box of marzipan candies that Daniel had personally recovered from the police evidence locker and returned to Lily.
"I told you I wouldn't let you sleep," Lily smiled, her cracked lips finally healing under a layer of soothing balm. "Marzipan sellers never break a promise."

Daniel stood by the window, watching them with a profound sense of clarity. He called his executive assistant on his private line.
"Jonathan," Daniel ordered. "I want a full asset investigation into Vanessa Sterling's family foundations. Every dollar she ever took from my corporate accounts for her 'charities' needs to be audited by midnight. And call the District Attorney. Tell them I am personally funding the prosecution for attempted murder by abandonment."
