Chapter 3 - The Crack in the Porcelain

Daniel turned slowly to look at his fiancĂ©e. The absolute trust that had defined their two-year relationship began to fracture under the weight of the doctor’s clinical data.

"Vanessa?" Daniel's voice was dangerously quiet. "You told me you only looked away for a single minute to buy a bottle of spring water."

"I... I was confused, Daniel!" Vanessa stammered, her flawless upper-class posture slipping for a fraction of a second. "The shock of losing him blurred my timeline. You know how fragile my nerves are since the charity gala stress."

"We need to see the park security footage," Dr. Vance intervened. "But the city cameras near the fountain have been down for maintenance since yesterday morning."

A triumphant smile flashed across Vanessa's face, hidden quickly beneath a sob. "See? It’s that street girl’s word against mine. She obviously targeted our family."

But while Vanessa celebrated the blind spot in the city’s grid, she forgot about the shifting nature of technology. Inside Noah's smart-watch—a premium child-tracker Daniel had bought him for his birthday—was a secondary, independent ambient audio-recording function designed to trigger during sudden spikes in heart rate.

Dr. Vance plugged a data cable from the tablet into the port on Noah's wrist. "The audio log from the time of the cardiac spike is downloading now. Let's see what Noah heard before he lost consciousness."
