Chapter 2 - The Silent Witness

Back at Brookstone Hospital, Noah lay beneath a hyperbaric oxygen tent, his heart monitor throwing jagged, frantic green lines across the screen. The diagnosis was severe anaphylactic shock combined with prolonged heat exposure. Someone had fed the severely allergic child a peanut-based pastry, and someone had left him in the scorching sun for nearly forty-five minutes before medical attention was sought.
Daniel Carter stood by the glass partition, his hands clenched into fists so tight his knuckles bled. Vanessa stood right behind him, her manicured hand resting on his shoulder, her voice a soothing poison.
"The doctors said he's going to make it, Daniel," she murmured, wiping an invisible tear from her cheek. "Thank God the police caught that street rat. Who knows what she gave him to make him compliant during the kidnapping?"
Before Daniel could respond, Dr. Julian Vance, the young physician who had caught Noah in the lobby, walked out of the ICU. His face was grim, holding a state-of-the-art medical tablet.
"Mr. Carter, we stabilized Noah's airway," Dr. Vance said, his eyes shifting coldly toward Vanessa. "But we found something troubling. The severe swelling in his throat wasn't caused by a random street snack. It was a highly concentrated almond-and-peanut paste used in premium European bakeries. The kind served at the VIP lounge in the park's botanical gardens this morning."

Vanessa’s hand stiffened on Daniel’s shoulder. "Well... someone could have dropped it on the floor, and Noah picked it up. You know how children are."
"Perhaps," Dr. Vance said, tapping his tablet. "But I also ran a routine toxicological timestamp. The allergen was ingested at exactly 10:15 AM. According to your statement to the police, Vanessa, you were at the park's water fountain at 11:00 AM. That’s a forty-five-minute discrepancy. Where was Noah during those forty-five minutes?"
