Chapter 9 - The Legal Reckoning

Six months later, the final sentencing hearing for Vanessa Sterling was held at the state supreme court.
Lily sat in the front row of the gallery, her hand tucked safely inside Daniel’s large palm, with Noah sitting on her other side. Lily’s grandmother, looking healthy and vibrant after months of proper medical care, sat right behind them.
Vanessa stood before the judge, stripped of her luxury dresses, wearing a plain green prison uniform. Her lawyer tried to argue for a suspended sentence based on her "prior philanthropic contributions."

The judge slammed her gavel down with terrifying force. "Prior philanthropy cannot buy forgiveness for a heart that leaves a suffocating child in the dirt to protect an inheritance. Vanessa Sterling, you are sentenced to fifteen years in the state correctional facility without the possibility of parole."
As the guards led Vanessa away, she turned and looked at Lily one last time. There was no arrogance left in her eyes—only the crushing realization that the little girl she had looked down upon had completely dismantled her world.
