Chapter 5 - Reclaiming the Innocent

At the police precinct, Lily sat in the dark holding cell, her head resting against the cold brick wall. The door suddenly flew open, the bright fluorescent light of the hallway blinding her for a moment.
Expecting another harsh interrogation from Officer Vance, she pulled her knees tightly to her chest. Instead, Daniel Carter stepped into the cell.
The billionaire, the hotel tycoon, the man who had grabbed her arm with such hatred just hours ago, dropped straight to his knees on the filthy concrete floor. "Unlock her," Daniel ordered the chief of police standing behind him, his voice cracking. "Now!"

"I am so sorry, Lily," Daniel choked out, tears streaming down his face. "I was blind. I was cruel. You saved my boy's life while the rest of the world walked past. Can you ever forgive me?"
Lily looked into his eyes, seeing the genuine remorse of a broken father. She didn't ask for money. She didn't complain about her pain.
