Chapter 2 - The Whispering Crowd

The word children hung in the air like a heavy, suffocating fog.

Arthur Sterling stepped forward, his face darkening as he looked between Daniel and the three kids. "Daniel? What is she talking about? You told us your ex-wife was an unstable, penniless woman who couldn't accept that you moved on! You never said anything about children!"

"Because he didn't know, Mr. Sterling," I answered smoothly before Daniel could form a sentence. I turned my head slightly toward Arthur, giving him a polite, professional nod. "When Daniel served me with divorce papers seven years ago, he didn't check on me. He didn't ask if I was safe, where I was living, or if I needed help paying for the apartment he abandoned. Three weeks after he walked out to pursue his corporate ambitions, I found out I was expecting triplets."

"Clara, stop!" Daniel finally found his voice, stepping forward, his hands trembling as he gestured frantically toward the hotel lobby. "This is insane! You’re making a scene! You planned this just to ruin my wedding!"

"Ruin your wedding?" Leo, my eldest son, looked up at Daniel with a sharp, intelligent gaze far beyond his seven years. He didn't flinch. "Mommies don't ruin things. You sent the letter to our house, mister. We saw the gold writing on the envelope."

Ethan added, stepping beside his brother with his arms folded, "And Mom didn't want to come. We told her we should come so we could see the man who forgot to pay for our baby shoes."

The surrounding guests—members of the city’s highest social elite—began murmuring furiously behind their silk scarves and tailored jackets.

"Did you hear that? Triplets?!"

"He abandoned her while she was pregnant with three kids?"

"And she’s Clara Vance! The owner of Vance Atelier downtown! She’s not poor at all—she designed the mayor’s wife’s gala dress last month!"

Daniel’s ears turned bright red. The narrative he had spent seven years carefully constructing—the story of the noble, self-made man who escaped a anchor-like ex-wife—was disintegrating in front of the very people whose approval he had traded his soul to obtain.

Suddenly, the grand double doors of the bridal suite burst open.

Olivia Sterling stepped onto the balcony above the terrace, surrounded by four bridesmaids holding her long lace train. She looked breathtaking in her white designer gown, but her face was twisted in confusion and rising anger as she saw the crowd gathered around the stairs instead of standing in the chapel.

"Daniel?" Olivia called out, her voice sharp as she swept down the carpeted stairs. "What is going on down here? Why are the photographers out here? The ceremony starts in ten minutes!"

She stopped at the bottom of the stairs, her eyes locking onto me, then dropping to the three children standing in front of her groom.

"Who are you?" Olivia demanded, her eyes narrowing at my emerald dress. "And why are you wearing my wedding colors?"
