Chapter 9 - A Mother’s Promise
Spring arrived six months later, bringing warm sunlight and blooming wild roses to the hills overlooking the city.
On a quiet Sunday afternoon, I took Leo, Ethan, and Maya to a beautiful park near our new home—a spacious, stone country house surrounded by ancient oak trees and green lawns where the children had endless room to run and play.
Thomas joined us, bringing a kite he had spent the morning building with the boys.
I sat on a wooden park bench, watching Thomas run across the grass with Leo and Ethan, laughing as the red kite caught the spring breeze and rose high into the clear blue sky. Maya sat beside me on the bench, leaning her head against my arm, watching her brothers with a happy smile.
"Mommy?" Maya asked softly, looking up at me with her bright brown eyes.
"Yes, my love?" I smoothed back her soft curls.
"Are we going to be happy like this forever?" she asked innocently.
I pulled her into my lap, wrapping my arms around her tightly, kissing the top of her head.
"We are, sweetie," I told her, my heart overflowing with deep, unbreakable peace. "Because happiness isn't something someone gives to you. It’s something you build with the people who love you."
Thomas walked over, carrying Ethan on his shoulders while Leo ran beside him, both boys cheering as the kite soared above the trees. Thomas sat beside us on the bench, slipping his arm around my waist, giving me a warm, gentle smile that carried years of understanding and quiet devotion.
"Look how high it’s flying, Mom!" Ethan yelled happily from Thomas’s shoulders, pointing at the sky.

I looked up at the sky, feeling the gentle warmth of the sun on my face. The cold, lonely nights in that tiny apartment, the tears shed over empty bank accounts, and the pain of betrayal were all far behind us now. They were not scars of defeat—they were the armor that had allowed me to protect my children and build a life of absolute beauty.
