Chapter 4 - The Retreat

The grand chapel doors remained closed that morning.

Within twenty minutes of my arrival, Arthur Sterling personally ordered the security team to clear the terrace and escort the press off the hotel grounds. The wedding was officially put on hold.

While hotel staff scrambled to handle the confusion among three hundred wealthy guests, Daniel, Olivia, Arthur Sterling, and I were escorted into the hotel’s private executive boardroom on the top floor. My three children sat comfortably in the adjoining lounge, eating fresh pastries and drinking orange juice under the watchful, caring eye of my assistant, Sarah, whom I had brought along.

Inside the boardroom, the air was thick with tension.

Arthur Sterling stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, his back turned to Daniel, his hands clasped tightly behind his back. Olivia sat in a velvet chair, her wedding veil removed and thrown onto the conference table, her face stained with ruined mascara and tears of humiliation.

Daniel sat across from me, his tuxedo jacket removed, his tie loosened, looking like a man who had lost a chess game in three moves.

"Explain," Arthur commanded without turning around.

Daniel looked at his father-in-law nervously. "Arthur... listen to me. When Clara and I were married, we were young, broke, and miserable. I left her because the relationship was dead! I had no idea she was pregnant! She kept it from me on purpose to trap me later!"

I sat straight in my chair, sipping a glass of iced water.

"I didn't keep them a secret to trap you, Daniel," I said softly, my voice cutting through his frantic excuses. "I kept them a secret to protect them from you."

Daniel sneered at me across the table. "Protect them?! From what? I’m a successful entrepreneur!"

"You were a man who threw away his wedding ring in a trash can outside a diner because you were embarrassed that your boss saw you eating with a waitress," I reminded him, my eyes locking onto his with unshakable clarity. "You were a man who told me that poor people deserve their misery because they lack ambition. Do you really think I was going to bring three innocent infants into the life of a man who measured human worth strictly by a bank balance?"

Olivia looked up at me through her tears. "Why didn't you come forward earlier? Why wait until today?"

"Because three weeks ago, your fiancé sent a handwritten note attached to this wedding invitation," I revealed, pulling a folded piece of paper from my bag and sliding it across the glass table toward Olivia.

Olivia reached out with a shaking hand and picked up the note.

She read Daniel’s words aloud, her voice trembling with disgust:

“Clara, I hope you come to the wedding. I want you to see what a real woman looks like, and what a real man can achieve when he isn't dragged down by someone from the gutter. Consider it my final gift to you.”

Arthur Sterling turned around slowly, his eyes burning with absolute fury as he stared at Daniel.

"You idiot," Arthur whispered, his voice trembling with rage. "You risked my family’s reputation, my company’s stock value, and my daughter’s dignity... over a petty personal grudge against your ex-wife?"

"Arthur, please!" Daniel stood up, reaching toward him. "It was just a joke! I was just angry about the past!"

May you like

Olivia stood up from her chair, took the diamond engagement ring off her finger, and threw it directly into Daniel’s face. It bounced off his cheek and rolled across the glass table.

"The wedding is canceled," Olivia announced coldly. "Get out of my sight."
