Chapter 3 - The Broken Veil

I looked at Olivia. She was young, beautiful, and accustomed to getting everything she desired. But beneath the diamonds and the designer silk, I saw a woman who was about to build her entire future on a foundation of manufactured lies.
"My name is Clara," I said calmly. "And I wore emerald because my children liked it."
Olivia turned her furious gaze toward Daniel. "Daniel! Is this the ex-wife? The one who used to wait tables? Why is she here? Why did you give her an invitation?!"
Daniel wiped sweat from his forehead with a monogrammed handkerchief. "Olivia, sweetheart, please... go back upstairs. It’s a misunderstanding. She’s trying to extort me! She brought these kids here to cause a public scene so I’d pay her off!"
"Extort you?" I let out a quiet, elegant laugh that cut straight through his panic. "Daniel, my boutique generated more revenue last quarter than your startup did in its first three years combined. I don't need your money. I have never asked you for a single cent of child support, and I never will."
I reached into my designer clutch and pulled out a small, sealed white envelope.
"I didn't come here to ask for money, Daniel," I continued, holding the envelope out toward him. "I came here to deliver a response to your invitation."
Daniel stared at the envelope as if it contained a venomous snake. "What is that?"
"A formal court summons," I announced clearly, making sure every reporter and investor heard every word. "And a request for a mandatory DNA paternity test. Not for money—but to legally remove your name from any future claims regarding my children's guardianship, and to ensure you never use my kids as a tax write-off or a public relations stunt."
Olivia gasped, clutching her father’s arm. "Paternity test?! Daniel... are those... are those yours?!"
"No! She’s lying!" Daniel yelled, completely losing his composure. He reached out violently to grab my arm, shouting, "Get off my property!"
Before his fingers could even touch the silk of my sleeve, two large men in black suits stepped out from behind the decorative rose hedges.
It was Mark and Marcus—the private security detail I had hired for the morning. Mark smoothly stepped between Daniel and me, catching Daniel’s wrist in mid-air with an iron grip that made Daniel gasp in pain.
"Keep your hands to yourself, sir," Mark said in a low, dangerous tone.
Arthur Sterling stepped between Daniel and his daughter, his face turning an icy, menacing shade of red.

"Daniel," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a terrifying hush that silenced the entire terrace. "Is this woman telling the truth? Are those three children yours?"
Daniel looked at Arthur, then at Olivia, then at the thirty cameras flashing in his face. His mouth opened, but no words came out. The silence was his confession.
