Chapter 6 - The Desperate Plea

When Daniel stepped into my private office, he no longer looked like the arrogant millionaire who had greeted guests on the hotel terrace four hours earlier.
His hair was disheveled, his eyes were bloodshot, and his suit was rumpled. He looked ten years older.
He stopped in the center of the plush rug, staring around my office—at the velvet couches, the international design awards lining the walls, and the large glass windows overlooking the city skyline. He was seeing the reality of my life for the first time, and it was crushing him.
"You built all this?" Daniel asked, his voice barely a rasp. "Without anyone’s help?"
"I built it with my own hands, Daniel," I replied, sitting behind my desk, resting my hands on the polished wood. "While you were using Arthur Sterling’s money to pretend you were a self-made tycoon, I was working sixteen-hour days to feed our children."
Daniel took a step forward, his hands trembling as he gripped the back of a leather chair. "Clara... please. You have to help me. You have to fix this."
I raised an eyebrow. "Fix what?"
"Arthur canceled the funding! My company is going under by the end of the week!" Daniel pleaded, his voice breaking into a pathetic whine. "The media is destroying me! They’re calling me a monster! If you release a public statement saying it was all a misunderstanding... that we agreed on a private arrangement years ago... I can save my reputation!"
I stared at him in quiet disbelief. Even now, standing in the ruins of his own creation, he couldn't see past his own selfishness. He didn't ask how the children were. He didn't ask how I had survived three infants alone. He only cared about his company’s stock value.
"Do you know what it’s like, Daniel?" I asked softly, my voice cutting through his panic.
"What?"
"Do you know what it’s like to sit in a cold room at 3:00 AM, holding three crying babies at the same time, wondering if you have enough money in your bank account to buy formula for the next morning?"
Daniel flinched, lowering his eyes.
"Do you know what it’s like to wash disposable diapers because you couldn't afford a new box?" I continued, my voice steady, filled with the weight of seven years of hidden pain. "I survived that. My children survived that. And not once during those seven years did I ever think about coming to you to ruin your life."
"Then why today?!" Daniel shouted, tears finally spilling down his cheeks. "Why bring them to my wedding?!"
"Because you forced your way back into my life," I answered firmly. "You couldn't just enjoy your success, Daniel. You were so consumed by your arrogance that you wanted to drag me down one last time to satisfy your ego. You invited me to your wedding to humiliate me—so I decided to show you the reality of the family you threw away."

Daniel dropped to his knees beside my desk, burying his face in his hands, sobbing openly. "Please, Clara... don't destroy me... I’ll give you whatever you want... I’ll pay child support! I’ll give you half my company shares!"
"I don't want your money, Daniel," I said, standing up from my chair and looking down at him. "My children don't need your money. But you are going to sign the legal surrender of your parental rights today, so you can never interfere in their lives again."
