Chapter 2 - Shadows over LaSalle

The rain began to fall as Lucas’s armored black Maybach pulled away from the curb of Hancock Meridian Trust.

Inside the cavernous, leather-scented interior of the vehicle, Maya sat quietly, her small legs dangling over the edge of the plush seat. She was clutching a warm cup of hot chocolate that Lucas’s driver had procured from a high-end bakery down the street. She drank it in tiny, hesitant sips, as though waiting for someone to snatch it away from her.

Lucas sat across from her, his long legs crossed, watching her with a mixture of profound awe and suffocating grief.

"Maya," Lucas said softly. "When did your mother pass away?"

"Three weeks ago," Maya replied, her voice small. "She got very sick in the winter. She was coughing a lot and couldn't go to the hospital because she said... she said people were looking for her."

Lucas felt a cold spike of dread drive through his chest. "Looking for her? Who was looking for her?"

Maya shook her head, her pony-tail swinging. "I don't know. Men in black jackets. They used to knock on our apartment door at night. Mommy would turn off all the lights and make me sit in the bathtub until they walked away. She told me we had to move every three months."

Lucas's hands clenched into tight fists inside his coat pockets. Hannah had been running. For twelve years, while he had convinced himself that staying away kept her safe, she had been hiding in the shadows of the very city he controlled.

Frank Miller turned around from the front passenger seat, holding an encrypted tablet. His face was grim.

"Boss, I just ran Hannah Bennett’s record through our private database," Frank said quietly. "She was working as a senior research nurse at Saint Jude Medical Center until eighteen months ago. She was fired after she filed an internal whistleblower report regarding unauthorized pharmaceutical testing on state-ward children."

Lucas’s eyes darkened. "Who owns Saint Jude Medical Center?"

Frank looked directly at Lucas. "Apex Life Sciences. It’s a pharmaceutical holding company owned by your younger brother, Marcus Rourke."

A suffocating silence filled the armored car.

Marcus Rourke was Lucas’s half-brother—a ruthless, ambitious man who handled the "clean" corporate side of the family empire while Lucas managed the underworld shipping, real estate, and political apparatus. For years, Marcus had resented Lucas’s absolute authority over the family syndicate. He had been quietly building his own power base within the city's corrupt political machine.

"Marcus didn't just fire her, did he?" Lucas asked, his voice deadly quiet.

"No," Frank replied softly. "Two weeks after she filed the report, her nursing license was revoked under false negligence charges. Her bank accounts were frozen by a court order. They drove her into absolute poverty, Boss. They made sure she couldn't afford medical care when she caught pneumonia."

Lucas looked at Maya, who was staring out the rain-streaked window at the neon lights of Chicago’s Magnificent Mile. The fading yellow dress, the sewn blue thread, the dirty sneakers—it hadn't just been bad luck. It was a systematic execution carried out by his own bloodline.

Marcus had starved the woman who saved Lucas’s life.

"Frank," Lucas said, his tone dropping into the terrifying register that signaled an immediate declaration of war. "Where is Marcus right now?"

"He's hosting a private fundraiser at the Drake Hotel with Senator Vance and three city council members," Frank answered.

"Redirect the car," Lucas ordered. "We're going to the Drake."

"Boss, wait," Frank urged cautiously. "Your brother has forty armed men from the North Side Syndicate securing the hotel. If we roll up there unannounced with the girl—"

"I don't care if he has the U.S. Marine Corps securing the hotel," Lucas growled, leaning forward. "My brother destroyed Hannah Bennett's life because she tried to protect innocent children. Now he knows her daughter is alive, and he knows she has my Sovereign Card. If I don't crush Marcus tonight, he will spend every hour of his life trying to eliminate Maya to hide what he did."

Maya looked up from her cup, her hazel eyes wide with fear. "Is the bad man going to hurt me?"

Lucas dropped back down to his knees in front of her. He took her tiny, chocolate-stained hand in his.

May you like

"Listen to me, Maya," Lucas said with an intensity that rooted her to her seat. "No one in this city will ever hurt you again. Not while I am breathing. Do you understand me?"

Maya looked into his eyes, seeing the fiercest, most terrifying man she had ever encountered—and yet, for the first time in three weeks, she felt completely, undeniably safe. She nodded once. "I believe you."
