Chapter 6 - The Bloodline Revealed

Lucas turned slowly, looking at Maya, who was standing quietly in the doorway holding her mother’s framed photograph against her chest.
"Maya..." Lucas whispered, his voice cracking with an emotion he hadn't felt in forty years. "Your mother... she never told me."
"Told you what?" Maya asked innocent eyes wide.
Lucas stood up, stepping across the small room. He dropped to both knees before her, taking both of her tiny hands into his massive, calloused palms.
"Twelve years ago, when I met your mother," Lucas said softly, "I thought leaving her was the only way to keep her safe. I thought if I stayed away, the bad world I live in wouldn't touch her. I was wrong. I was so wrong, Maya."
He looked deeply into her hazel eyes, seeing his own soul reflected back at him.
"I am your father, Maya," Lucas said, the words spilling out like a confession before God.
Maya froze. She looked at his dark suit, his scarred hands, and then down at the photograph of her mother.
"Mommy used to look at a picture in her Bible," Maya whispered, her eyes shining with tears. "A picture of a man standing in the rain behind a pharmacy. She said he was a king who went away to protect his kingdom."
"I don't care about the kingdom anymore," Lucas choked out, pulling her tightly into his chest. "I only care about you."
Maya buried her face into his shoulder, her arms wrapping tightly around his neck, letting out a long, shuddering sob that she had been holding in since her mother died.
Frank Miller stood in the doorway, wiping a tear from his own weathered cheek. He quietly cleared his throat.
"Boss," Frank said softly. "We need to move. Marcus’s men just intercepted our radio frequencies. 'Mad Dog' Russo knows we're in Pilsen. They're shutting down both ends of the alley."
Lucas held Maya close, lifting her up into his arms. All the coldness, all the dark apathy that had ruled his life for two decades, vanished, replaced by a white-hot, protective rage.
"Frank," Lucas said, his tone turning to hardened steel. "Call Team Alpha. Tell them to bring the heavy armor."

"We fighting our way out?" Frank asked, pulling a tactical sidearm from his shoulder holster.
"No," Lucas said, holding his daughter tightly against his heart. "We're cleaning house."
