Chapter 8 - The Lakefront Vault

The lakefront estate in Evanston was a sprawling marble mansion perched on a cliff overlooking the stormy black expanse of Lake Michigan. Beneath the estate lay the Rourke family's primary physical vault—a subterranean bunker containing hundreds of millions of dollars in untraceable bearer bonds, gold bullion, and emergency foreign currencies.

Inside the vault, Marcus was frantically stuffing thick stacks of hundred-dollar bills and bond certificates into heavy black duffel bags. Sweating profusely, his tuxedo jacket discarded, he kept glancing at his watch.

11:15 PM.

"Hurry up!" Marcus screamed at his two remaining accountants. "The helicopter is waiting at the pad! We have forty-five minutes before the airspace is locked!"

"Sir," one accountant stammered, looking at a laptop terminal. "The FBI just issued a tier-one arrest warrant for you and Mayor Vance. The news is broadcasting Hannah Bennett's ledger live on CNN!"

"Shut up!" Marcus shrieked, slamming his fist onto the stainless steel table. "We take the cash, we fly to Mexico, and we reconstruct the firm from there!"

BOOM!

The heavy reinforced steel doors of the subterranean vault groaned inward, the high-grade electronic locks melting into glowing orange slag as a thermal breaching charge detonated outside.

The heavy steel doors blew inward, crashing onto the marble floor with a deafening roar.

Through the smoke walked Lucas Rourke.

He walked alone. He didn't carry a rifle or a tactical squad. He wore his black coat, his hands resting casually in his pockets, his gaze fixed entirely on his younger brother.

Marcus stumbled backward, dropping his duffel bag, grabbing a gold-plated semi-automatic pistol from the table and aiming it with both hands.

"Stay back, Lucas!" Marcus screamed, his voice high-pitched and hysterical. "I'll do it! I swear to God I'll shoot you!"

Lucas kept walking. Step by step, closing the distance.

"You took everything from her, Marcus," Lucas said, his voice calm, steady, and terrifyingly serene. "You took her career, her dignity, her health, and her life. You made her daughter hide in a bathtub while your thugs knocked on her door."

"She was nobody!" Marcus shrieked, tears of rage and panic streaming down his face. "She was just a nurse!"

"She was my wife in the eyes of God," Lucas said, stopping three feet from the barrel of the gun. "And Maya is my daughter."

Marcus gasped, his eyes widening in shock. "What...?"

"You tried to kill my child, Marcus," Lucas whispered.

Marcus’s hand trembled so violently the gun shook. He looked at Lucas’s eyes and realized that the brother he thought was soft, the brother he thought had grown weak, was an absolute god of vengeance standing before him.

Marcus lowered the gun slowly, his spirit completely broken. He collapsed onto his knees amidst the stacks of stolen cash, sobbing pitifully.

"Please, Lucas..." Marcus wept, clutching his brother’s trouser leg. "We're blood! We're brothers! Don't kill me... please..."

Lucas looked down at his brother with a mixture of profound pity and absolute disgust.

He reached down, gently taking the gold gun from Marcus’s limp fingers, racking the slide, and tossing it into the corner of the vault.

"I'm not going to kill you, Marcus," Lucas said softly.

Marcus looked up, a tiny glimmer of hope touching his eyes. "You... you aren't?"

"No," Lucas replied, turning his back on him as the sound of federal police sirens began to echo down the long concrete driveway outside. "Death is too merciful for what you did. You are going to spend the rest of your life in a six-by-eight cell, listening to the world forget your name."
