Chapter 7 - The Battle of Pilsen

The narrow alley behind the Pilsen apartment building was blocked on both ends by four heavy black SUVs. Headlights cut through the driving rain, blinding anyone who stepped out of the rear exit.

Standing in the center of the alley, wearing a heavy leather coat and wielding a tactical shotgun, was "Mad Dog" Russo—Marcus’s most lethal enforcer. Behind him stood twenty armed mercenaries.

"Rouske!" Russo shouted over the roar of the rain. "Marcus says you're stripped of your rank! Hand over the kid and the ledger, and we'll let you walk out of Chicago alive!"

The rear metal door of the apartment building opened slowly.

Lucas stepped out onto the concrete landing, holding Maya in his left arm, shielding her completely with his thick bulletproof trench coat. He didn't have a weapon drawn. He just stood there under the flickering alley light, looking down at Russo with dead, hollow eyes.

"Russo," Lucas said, his voice easily carrying over the storm. "You served my father for fifteen years."

"Your father is dead, Lucas!" Russo spat back. "And Marcus is paying twice what you pay!"

"Money can't buy you out of a grave, Russo," Lucas replied quietly.

Suddenly, the alley walls vibrated with a deep, mechanical roar.

At both ends of the narrow alleyway, behind Marcus’s SUVs, massive thirty-ton industrial transport trucks—part of Lucas’s subterranean logistics fleet—pounded through the darkness. They didn't slow down. They smashed directly into the back quarter-panels of the interceptor vehicles, crushing them like aluminum cans against the brick walls of the alley.

Marcus’s mercenaries screamed, scattering in terror as fifty of Lucas’s personal Sovereign Guards, clad in full tactical gear, dropped down from the fire escapes above, weapons raised.

"DROP YOUR WEAPONS!" Frank Miller roared from the landing, a tactical rifle pointed directly at Russo’s head.

Within fifteen seconds, without a single shot fired from Lucas’s side, Marcus’s entire hit squad was disarmed, pinned against the muddy brick walls, and handcuffed.

Mad Dog Russo was thrown onto his knees in front of Lucas, his shotgun clattering into the puddle at his feet.

Lucas stepped down off the landing, his leather boots splashing in the rain. He looked down at Russo.

"Where is Marcus?" Lucas asked softly.

Russo spat blood onto the asphalt, glaring up at him. "He's at the lakefront vault in Evanston. He's clearing out the bearer bonds! He knows you locked the banks, so he's taking the physical cash and flying out from the private airfield at midnight!"

Lucas looked at Frank. "Secure these men. Turn the evidence ledger over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's regional director. Tell him that if he doesn't issue a federal warrant for Mayor Vance and Marcus within the hour, I will release the raw patient files to every news outlet in the country."

"Understood, Boss," Frank said. "What about you?"

Lucas looked down at Maya, who was fast asleep against his shoulder, exhausted from the terror and noise.

"I'm going to Evanston," Lucas said. "It's time to end this."
