Chapter 3 - The Drake Confrontation

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a spectacle of golden chandeliers, velvet drapes, and high-society opulence. Over two hundred of Chicago’s most powerful figures—judges, politicians, police chiefs, and elite developers—mingled with crystal champagne flutes in hand.

At the head of the main table sat Marcus Rourke. Thirty-four years old, impeccably groomed in a tailor-made double-breasted tuxedo, Marcus exuded the sharp, greasy charisma of a man who bought laws before they were written.

Beside him sat Mayor-elect Thomas Vance and Chief of Police Robert Hayes.

"I'm telling you, Thomas," Marcus chuckled, clinking his glass against the politician's. "The land acquisition in West Englewood is guaranteed. Once the city declares it an urban blight zone, Apex Life Sciences buys the dirt for pennies on the dollar."

Before Vance could reply, the heavy mahogany double doors at the back of the ballroom exploded inward with a violent CRACK.

The entire room gasped. Splintered wood and broken brass latches rained across the polished parquet floor. Four of Marcus’s private security guards were thrown backward through the doorway, crashing into a table of champagne towers, sending glass and gold liquid cascading across the carpet.

Through the smoke and ruin walked Lucas Rourke.

He wasn't wearing a tuxedo. He wore his heavy black trench coat, rain glistening on his broad shoulders. In his left hand, he held Maya, who was tucked securely against his side, her small hand clutched tightly in his. Behind him stood Frank Miller and twenty armed Rourke Enforcers, their heavy coats pulled back to reveal automatic weapons.

The music stopped. The chatter died instantly. Guests scrambled backward, knocking over chairs in their desperate rush to reach the side exits.

Marcus Rourke stood up slowly, his face tightening into a dark mask of fury. He gestured to his remaining security detail, who immediately drew their sidearms, creating a tense standoff in the center of the ballroom.

"Lucas," Marcus said coldly, stepping around the main table. "You've lost your mind. This is a private political gala. You can't just storm in here like a street thug."

"I own the street, Marcus," Lucas said, his voice echoing off the gilded ceiling. "And I own this hotel."

Marcus’s eyes drifted down to Maya. When he recognized the girl’s faded yellow dress and hazel eyes, a cruel, mocking smirk spread across his face.

"Ah," Marcus sneered. "I see you found Hannah’s little bastard. I wondered how long it would take for that Sovereign terminal ping to pull you out of your cave."

The air in the room grew so tight it felt as though the oxygen had been drained out.

Lucas took two steps forward. Every gun in the room twitched, but no one dared pull a trigger.

"You targeted her," Lucas said softly. "You destroyed her career. You froze her money. You let her die of a curable illness in a cold apartment."

Marcus shrugged nonchalantly, adjusting his diamond cufflinks. "She was a loose end, Lucas! She found out about the trials at Saint Jude. She was going to the federal prosecutors! I did what needed to be done to protect the family firm—the firm you were too soft to manage!"

"She saved my life twelve years ago, Marcus," Lucas growled.

"And she ruined mine!" Marcus barked back, his composure finally cracking. "You gave her a Sovereign Card! A card that grants her access to thirty percent of the Rourke syndicate's secret vaults! You gave our family's fortune to a nurse!"

Marcus took a step closer, pointing a trembling finger at Maya.

"That child doesn't belong here," Marcus spat. "She is a threat to everything we’ve built. Hand her over to my men, Lucas. We will process her quietly, and we can go back to business."

Maya buried her face in Lucas’s coat, trembling violently.

Lucas didn't raise his voice. He looked at Police Chief Hayes, who was cowering behind the Mayor-elect.

"Chief Hayes," Lucas called out.

The police chief swallowed hard, stepping forward nervously. "Y-yes, Mr. Rourke?"

"Are you aware that Marcus Rourke has been running illegal biological testing on state-ward children through Apex Life Sciences?" Lucas asked.

Hayes pale face flushed. "Lucas... please... don't do this here..."

"Answer me!" Lucas roared, his voice shaking the crystal chandeliers overhead.

"I... I knew there were inquiries!" Hayes stuttered frantically. "Marcus assured me it was all federal compliance work!"

Lucas looked back at his brother. "You used my city, my police chief, and my money to torture children and murder the woman who saved me. You are no longer my brother."

Marcus laughed, a harsh, maniacal sound. "You think you can cast me out? Half the family board answers to me now, Lucas! The North Side crew, the dock unions, the city council—they know you've grown old and soft! Try to touch me, and Chicago will burn in a civil war!"

Lucas looked down at Maya, then gently handed her hand to Frank Miller. "Frank. Take Maya to the car."

"Boss—" Frank started.

"Take her to the car, Frank," Lucas repeated quietly.

Frank nodded grimly, scooping Maya up into his arms and carrying her quickly out through the shattered rear doors, surrounded by six guards.

Once the child was clear of the room, Lucas unbuttoned his heavy trench coat, letting it fall to the floor. He stepped into the open center of the ballroom, reaching into his suit jacket.

Marcus backed away, his eyes wide with sudden terror. "Shoot him! Kill him!"
