Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Syndicate

By sunrise, the rain over Chicago had stopped. The morning sun broke through the heavy gray clouds, casting a golden light across the towering skyscrapers and the blue waters of Lake Michigan.

The news was staggering.

Mayor-elect Thomas Vance had been taken into federal custody at his Gold Coast penthouse. Police Chief Hayes had tendered his immediate resignation before being escorted out of headquarters in handcuffs. Apex Life Sciences was seized by federal auditors, its assets placed into a public restitution trust for the victimized children.

And Marcus Rourke was processed into the Metropolitan Correctional Center, held without bail on charges of federal racketeering, conspiracy to commit murder, and human rights violations.

At the Hancock Meridian Trust building on LaSalle Street, the heavy glass doors opened at 9:00 AM sharp.

Inside the grand marble lobby, the senior board of directors stood in a strict, formal line, wearing dark suits, their heads bowed respectfully.

At the end of the line stood Frank Miller, holding a legal folder bound in thick blue leather.

The front doors swung open, and Lucas Rourke walked into the lobby.

He didn't wear his trench coat. He wore a simple, tailored navy suit. And holding his hand tightly was Maya, wearing a beautiful new white cotton dress embroidered with bright yellow daisies, her blonde hair neatly braided with a silk yellow ribbon.

The entire board bowed as Lucas approached the central desk.

"Mr. Rourke," the interim bank director said nervously, bowing his head. "The Sovereign accounts have been fully restored. The board is awaiting your instructions regarding the restructuring of the holding firm."

Lucas stopped at the desk, looking at the high-security teller terminal where six days ago a terrified little girl had stood in muddy sneakers.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the titanium Sovereign Card—the card etched with the raven and the key.

He didn't slide it into his own wallet. He gently pressed it into Maya’s small hand, folding her fingers over the cool metal.

"Frank," Lucas said clearly, his voice echoing through the quiet lobby.

"Yes, Mr. Rourke?"

"Transfer eighty percent of the Rourke Sovereign Portfolio, including all real estate holdings, shipping lines, and private trusts, into the Maya Bennett Educational and Charitable Foundation."

The bank directors gasped quietly, but no one dared object.

"And what about the remaining twenty percent, Boss?" Frank asked with a warm smile.

"Distribute it as pensions for all former workers of the firm," Lucas instructed. "The Rourke Syndicate is dissolved as of today. We are out of the darkness, Frank."

"Understood, Mr. Rourke," Frank said, filing the blue folder with a deep, satisfied nod.

Lucas looked down at Maya, who was looking up at him with bright, happy hazel eyes.

"Is this your bank now, Daddy?" Maya asked softly.

Lucas smiled, a genuine, warm smile that reached his eyes for the first time in twelve years. He knelt down and picked her up into his arms.

"No, sweetheart," Lucas whispered, kissing her cheek. "It's yours. But we're leaving it behind."
