Chapter 5 - The Box Under the Bed

The apartment building in Pilsen was a decaying, three-story brick structure with rusting fire escapes and peeling green paint. The rain poured down in sheets, washing dirt through the clogged gutters.
Lucas’s motorcade filled the narrow alleyway behind the building. Ten armed men formed a tactical perimeter around the entrance, their eyes scanning the dark rooftops for any sign of Marcus’s hitmen.
Lucas carried Maya up the narrow, creaking wooden stairs to the third floor. The hallway smelled of boiled cabbage, damp plaster, and bleach.
At the end of the hall stood door 3B. A yellow police seal had been taped across the frame, torn down the middle where someone had recently kicked the door in.
Lucas pushed the door open. His heart sank.
The tiny two-room apartment had been completely ransacked. Couch cushions were slashed open, drawers were dumped onto the floor, and old medical textbooks were torn apart and scattered like dead leaves across the linoleum.
"They came here looking for Hannah's research," Frank muttered, stepping over a broken desk lamp, his flashlight beam cutting through the gloom.
Maya slipped down from Lucas’s arms and walked directly to the tiny bedroom in the back. A small twin mattress sat tilted against the wall, its springs exposed.
She knelt beside a rusted iron radiator, reaching her small arm into a loose floorboard panel that had been painted to match the baseboard.
"They didn't find it," Maya whispered proudly.
She pulled out a dented, fireproof steel cash box wrapped in oilcloth. She held it up to Lucas with both hands.
Lucas knelt beside her, taking the heavy box. "Does it have a key?"
"Mommy said the key was in my head," Maya said softly. "The code is my birthday."
Lucas carefully turned the three brass combination dials on the front of the box: 0-5-1-6.
The heavy lock clicked open with a metallic snap.
Inside the box lay three items:
First, a thick ledger bound in black leather, filled with Hannah’s neat handwriting, detailing patient IDs, chemical formulas, and financial transaction codes connecting Apex Life Sciences directly to Mayor Vance’s campaign fund.
Second, a framed photograph of a young, radiant Hannah standing on a beach, smiling into the camera, holding a tiny infant Maya in her arms.
And third, a folded letter written on yellow legal paper, addressed simply: To Lucas.
Lucas’s hands shook as he opened the letter.
Lucas,
If you are reading this, it means my time has run out, and my sweet Maya has found her way to you. I never asked you for anything twelve years ago because I knew the dark world you lived in, and I wanted to protect Maya from it.
But Marcus found us. He realized what I saw at the hospital. He has systematically destroyed everything I tried to build to keep her safe.
I don't care about the money, Lucas. I don't care about the corporate games. I am dying, and my only wish in this world is that my daughter lives long enough to grow up.
She has your eyes, Lucas. She has your quiet strength. Please... do not let my brother turn her into a casualty of your war.
Love always, Hannah.
A heavy tear fell from Lucas’s eye, soaking into the yellow paper.
She has your eyes.
Lucas stared at the words. The truth hit him like a physical blow, knocking the wind from his chest.
May you like
Maya wasn't just the daughter of the woman who had saved his life.
Maya was his daughter.
