Chapter 1 - The Weight of Seven Years

The cool steel of the door handle felt like ice against Adrian Cole’s palm, yet his hand was burning. When he pushed the door open, the quiet, rhythmic hum of a heart monitor greeted him first, breaking the heavy stillness of the corridor.

The room was small, lit only by the grey late-afternoon sun filtering through dirty blinds. On the narrow hospital bed lay Sienna.

Adrian’s breath hitched in his throat. The woman who had once occupied every waking thought of his youth looked terrifyingly fragile. Her dark hair was spread across the white pillow like spun ink, her skin pale and translucent, highlighting the sharp hollows of her cheekbones. She looked diminished, as if the last seven years had shaved away pieces of her until only the bare essence remained.

As the door clicked shut, her eyelids fluttered open. Deep brown eyes—eyes that had once flashed with fiery defiance during their final argument—slowly focused on him.

"Adrian," she whispered. Her voice was thin, a dry rustle of autumn leaves.

"Sienna."

He stepped closer, his polished designer shoes feeling wildly out of place on the faded linoleum. He reached the side of her bed, looking down at her, his mind racing with a thousand questions, a thousand accusations, and an overwhelming surge of something he hadn't allowed himself to feel in seven years: pure, unadulterated terror.

"You came," she murmured, a faint, fragile smile touching her lips.

"A doctor texted me. Said you were admitted. Said your condition was serious," Adrian said, his tone clipped, trying desperately to anchor himself to the cold efficiency that governed his daily existence. "What’s wrong with you, Sienna? And... who are those children sitting on the bench outside?"

Sienna closed her eyes for a brief moment, taking a shallow breath that seemed to cost her immense effort. "They're my daughters, Adrian. Maya, Chloe, and Lily."

"Your daughters," Adrian repeated. The words felt heavy, jagged. "And who is their father?"

Sienna opened her eyes and looked directly into his grey-blue gaze—the exact shade of the six eyes waiting outside the room. "You know the answer to that. You saw them. You don't need a DNA test to know they carry your blood, Adrian."

A quiet rage, cold and dangerous, ignited behind Adrian's ribs. "Seven years, Sienna. You walked out on me seven years ago. You vanished into thin air. I searched for you for months until my pride finally forced me to stop. And all this time, you were raising my children in secret?"

"I didn't have a choice," she said softly, a tear slipping from the corner of her eye and soaking into the pillowcase. "Your family, Adrian. Your mother... she made it very clear what would happen if I stayed. She threatened to take them from me the moment they were born. She called me a gold-digger, said I was trying to trap the heir to the Cole empire."

Adrian felt as though the oxygen had been sucked out of the room. "My mother?"

"She gave me a choice: run away and raise them in peace, or stay and watch the Cole legal team tear me apart until I was deemed unfit and stripped of parental rights. I was twenty-three, broke, and carrying triplets. I was terrified."

Before Adrian could process the betrayal by his own mother, the electronic monitor beside the bed began to beep at a frantic pace. Sienna’s chest heaved, her hands clutching at the thin blanket as her face drained of what little color it had left.

"Sienna!" Adrian dropped to his knees beside the bed, his corporate composure vanishing instantly. He grabbed her trembling hand. "Sienna, hold on!"

"Promise me..." she gasped, her knuckles turning white as she gripped his fingers. "Promise me, Adrian... if anything happens to me today... you won't let your mother near them. Promise me you'll protect Maya, Chloe, and Lily. They don't know who you are... but they need a father."

"Nothing is going to happen to you!" Adrian shouted, his voice cracking. "Nurse! Doctor! Get in here!"

The door burst open, and a team of medical personnel rushed into the room, pushing Adrian aside. Alarms blared as doctors began shouting orders.

"He's in respiratory distress! We need to intubate, now!"

Adrian was shoved backward out of the room into the bright, unforgiving light of the hallway. The door swung shut in his face, leaving him standing there, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

Slowly, he turned around.

The three little girls were still sitting on the bench. They were looking at him now, their grey-blue eyes wide with confusion and fear.

The quiet one—Lily—clutched her notebook tighter against her chest. Maya, the one on the left, stood up from the bench, took a few slow steps toward him, and looked up into his face.

"Is Mama going to die?" Maya asked quietly.

May you like

Adrian lowered himself to one knee, bringing himself level with the three little girls who shared his face, his eyes, and his blood. The billionaire who commanded boardrooms was gone; only a man confronted with his own ghost remained.

"No," Adrian said, his voice raw, holding out his hands to them for the first time. "I won't let anything happen to her. I promise."
