Chapter 7 - Shadows of the Past

Just as life seemed to settle into a peaceful rhythm, an unexpected shadow emerged from Sienna's past.
One afternoon while Adrian was at the office, a man named Marcus Vance appeared at the entrance of the penthouse building. Marcus was Sienna’s former landlord from the impoverished neighborhood where she had lived with the triplets before her hospitalization—a bitter, opportunistic man who had discovered through tabloid rumors that his former penniless tenant was now living with billionaire Adrian Cole.
Marcus approached the press, attempting to sell fabricated stories claiming that Sienna had neglected her children, abandoned her debts, and used fraudulent means to secure housing during her time in his building.
The headlines hit the internet by late afternoon: “Billionaire’s Secret Partner Accused of Child Neglect by Former Landlord!”
Adrian was in the middle of a contract negotiation when Harrison handed him the tablet displaying the news.
Adrian’s eyes narrowed into slits of deadly calm. "Find Marcus Vance. Bring him to my legal team's private office within the hour."
By 5:00 PM, Marcus Vance sat nervously in a sleek, glass-walled conference room in the Cole legal tower, sweating profusely in his cheap suit. Across the table sat Adrian Cole, flanked by three of the most feared litigators in the state.
"Mr. Vance," Adrian began, his voice dangerously soft, folding his hands on the table. "You sold a story to a tabloid for twenty thousand dollars, claiming my wife—" Adrian paused slightly, his voice firm on the word, "—neglected her children."
"I... I just spoke the truth!" Marcus stammered, sweating through his collar. "She owed me three months' rent! She was always out late! She left those kids alone!"
"Sienna worked double shifts at a bakery to pay for her children's medical care," Adrian said, leaning forward, his gaze piercing through the man like a blade. "And as for the rent, our financial records show you illegally raised her rent by fifty percent in violation of city housing laws, extortionately charging a single mother because you knew she had nowhere else to go."
Adrian tapped a button on the conference phone.
"We have filed a civil lawsuit against you for extortion, defamation, and tenant harassment," Adrian's lead attorney announced calmly. "We have also submitted your accounting records to the IRS for tax evasion regarding the cash payments you demanded from low-income tenants."
Marcus’s face turned pale as paper. "Wait! Please! I was just trying to make some money! I'll retract the story! I'll tell the news I lied!"
"You will retract it within the hour," Adrian said, standing up and pulling his suit jacket straight. "And then you will pack your bags and leave this city. If I ever hear your name spoken near my family again, I will ensure you spend the rest of your natural life drowning in legal judgments you can never pay off."
Marcus scrambled out of his chair, nodding frantically, practically tumbling out of the room in sheer terror.
That evening, Adrian returned home. Sienna was standing in the living room, looking at her phone, her face filled with anxiety over the news stories.
"Adrian," she said nervously as he walked in. "The media... they're saying awful things about how I raised the girls..."
Adrian walked over, took the phone gently from her hands, and tossed it onto the sofa. He pulled her into his arms, holding her close against his chest.
"It's already taken care of, Sienna," Adrian whispered into her hair. "The story has been retracted. The man who tried to hurt you will never bother us again. No one will ever use your past struggles against you."

Sienna buried her face in his chest, letting out a long, shuddering breath of relief. "How do you do it? How do you solve everything so fast?"
"Because for seven years, I had nothing worth fighting for," Adrian said softly, kissing the top of her head. "Now, I have everything."
