Chapter 1 - The Confession in the Rain

The neon light from the Chicago skyline flickered through the rain-streaked glass, casting long shadows across the empty office floor.
Evelyn Hart stood frozen beside the desk, her hand still resting near the keyboard where Grant Mercer’s dark record of extortion was displayed.
Adrian Vale didn't move. His gaze was fixed on her, cold and calculating. The air in the room felt suddenly razor-thin, as if a single wrong word could shatter the quiet tension between them.
"You spoke to the Feds," Adrian said softly, his voice dangerously level. "Why, Evelyn?"
Evelyn drew a deep, shuddering breath, refusing to look down. "Because six months ago, I found a discrepancy in the Midwest shipping manifests for Lakeside Freight. I thought it was an accounting error—a mislabeled cargo list for heavy machinery. But when I investigated further, I realized Grant was using my digital signature to clear unregistered shipments through the port of Chicago."
Adrian’s eyes narrowed slightly. "He was framing you."
"Yes," Evelyn replied, her voice gaining strength. "He set up a dummy shell company under my name. When federal agents contacted me yesterday, they believed I was helping smuggle illegal contraband through Vale Meridian’s supply lines. I didn't give them your name, Adrian. I gave them his."
Adrian stepped closer, looking at the spreadsheet glowing on the monitor. "Grant wasn't just harassing you. He was building a trap to make you his fall guy so he could save himself from federal prosecution."
Evelyn’s eyes welled with tears, but she brushed them away furiously. "He knew if I went to prison, Paige’s medical coverage would vanish, and she’d die in a state ward. He thought he had me cornered from every angle."

Adrian looked at her—really looked at her—not as a helpless employee, but as a woman who had fought silently against an impossible tide to protect her sister.
"My security team will handle the federal investigators tomorrow morning," Adrian declared quietly. "You are not going to prison, Evelyn. And your sister’s insurance will never be touched again."
