Chapter 3 - The Transfer of Paige

At 7:00 AM the following morning, a private specialized medical transport arrived at the suburban nursing facility where Paige resided.
Evelyn stood in the lobby alongside Adrian, watching two paramedics gently transfer her twenty-four-year-old sister onto a state-of-the-art medical gurney.
Paige looked small beneath her heavy blankets, her dark hair framed by a neck brace. But her eyes were bright, filled with a sudden surge of hope as she saw Evelyn approach.
"Evie?" Paige whispered, her voice weak but clear. "What's happening? They said I'm moving to the city center?"
Evelyn knelt beside the gurney, taking her sister's pale hand into her own. "You're going to the best rehab facility in the Midwest, Paige. You're getting the experimental spinal therapy we couldn't afford."
Paige looked past Evelyn, her gaze landing on Adrian, who stood near the entrance, dressed in an immaculate charcoal suit, flanked by two bodyguards.
"Who is he?" Paige asked softly.
Evelyn looked back at Adrian, who gave her a subtle, reassuring nod.
"He's someone who made sure no one can ever hurt us again," Evelyn answered, kissing her sister's forehead.
As the ambulance pulled away toward downtown Chicago, Adrian stepped beside Evelyn on the snow-covered sidewalk.
"Grant Mercer has gone into hiding," Adrian reported, his voice low. "Federal warrants were issued two hours ago. But Moretti’s men are trying to smuggle him out of the state before he can talk to the Grand Jury."

"If Grant talks, he'll implicate Moretti," Evelyn realized.
"And if Grant dies, Moretti escapes accountability," Adrian added, his expression darkening. "We need Grant alive."
