Chapter 16 - The Cornered Beast

When Robert reported back to Jessica about Emily’s counter-threat, the family dynamic disintegrated into absolute chaos. Rather than backing down, Jessica became completely unhinged. Cornered and desperate, she decided to take a reckless, scorched-earth approach.

Two nights after the cafe meeting, Emily was awakened at 2:00 AM by the shrill blare of her house's security alarm.

She bolted upright, her heart hammering against her ribs. Downstairs, the sound of breaking glass echoed through the Victorian house. Emily grabbed her phone and dialed 911, retreating into her bedroom closet and locking the heavy wooden door.

"Someone is breaking into my house," she whispered frantically to the dispatcher.

Outside the closet door, she could hear heavy, chaotic footsteps stomping through the hallways. Objects were being thrown, furniture overturned. It wasn't the methodical search of a burglar; it was a tantrum of pure malice.

"Where is it?!" a voice screamed. It was Jessica, her voice cracked and hysterical. "Where did you hide her jewelry, you selfish bitch?! You ruined my life!"

Emily held her breath, tears streaming down her face as she listened to her sister destroy the home her grandmother had loved so dearly. The ticking of her silver watch on her wrist felt agonizingly loud in the confined space of the closet.

Flashes of blue and red lights suddenly illuminated the bedroom windows through the closet cracks. Sirens wailed, drawing to a screeching halt outside.

"Police! Freeze!" a loud voice boomed from downstairs.

A chaotic scuffle ensued, followed by shouting and the unmistakable sound of handcuffs clicking into place. Within minutes, a police officer knocked gently on Emily’s bedroom door, announcing that the scene was secure.

Emily emerged from the closet to find her living room in shambles. Vases were shattered, paintings torn from the walls. Jessica was being led out the front door in handcuffs, screaming profanities, her hair wild and her eyes vacant with rage.

Julian arrived twenty minutes later, having broken every speed limit in the city to get to her. He ran through the ruined front door and pulled Emily into a ferocious embrace. She was shaking violently, but she wasn't crying anymore. The final illusion of family had been violently shattered.
